Its finally here! Despite a possible pending legal battle over allegations that Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) stole technology from eBay (NASDAQ:EBAY) subsidiary PayPal in developing “Google Wallet,” the search engine giant is pushing forward in its new initiatives, and is planning to start beta testing a sub-feature of the Google Wallet service, “Google Offers.”
According to Google’s official blog the company is set to start beta testing Google Offers tomorrow morning in Portland, Oregon. Why start in Portland, here’s the rationale according to Google, “Portlanders know how to mix the urban (killer coffee, music and art) and the small-town (easy walking, biking and socializing). There’s no end to the city’s great restaurants, coffee shops, hot spots and places to explore. That’s why, when we started planning the Google Offers beta, we knew Portland was the ideal place to get it all kicked off.”
Small businesses in the Portland area have already signed onto participate in the “Offers” beta program, with notable local names such as “Floyd’s Coffee,” “Le Bistro Montage,” “Powell’s Books,” and others slated to offer customer discounts and rewards through Google’s new service in tomorrow’s launch.
If beta-tests in Portland go without any hitches, Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) plans to expand its “Offers” programs to markets in San Francisco and New York City before the summer ends. Groupon and Living Social (NASDAQ:AMZN) better keep an eye out.
