It’s that time of year again to wear green, celebrate, and maybe even find a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. Sure, the last part is a bit of a stretch, but many Americans every year look forward to St. Patrick’s Day with the upmost anticipation. Originally a religious feast for the patron saint of Ireland, St. Paddy’s is a day full of parades, festivals, good food, and good drinks. But if you’re thinking about staying in on March 17 or just want to wind down after a night of partying, why not give a nod to the day of green by watching an Irish film? Here are five movies with Irish themes.
1. Gangs of New York, 2002
Staring Leonardo DiCaprio, Daniel Day-Lewis, and Cameron Diaz, Gangs of New York is a movie set in mid-19th century New York; it follows the bloody rivalry between Irish immigrants and Americans. Directed by Martin Scorsese, the film was nominated for numerous awards, even earning a Best Picture nod at the Oscars. If you’re looking for a bit of “history” with impressive performances, this film will do.
2. The Boondock Saints, 1999
Boys (and men) everywhere seem to be devoted fans of the Boondock Saints. Starring Sean Patrick Flanery and The Walking Dead’s Norman Reedus, the movie follows fraternal Irish-American twins Connor and Murphy McManus, who become vigilantes after killing two members of the Russian mob while celebrating St. Patrick’s Day. After the experience, the boys decide to hunt Boston’s evil and corrupt, taking them out one at a time. The movie is fun and entertaining, and of course, fans of Daryl will love it.
3. The Departed, 2006
Martin Scorsese does it again with another award-winning movie filled with Irish themes. Set in Boston, this incredible film follows an undercover cop working as a mole in an Irish gang. The film has a stellar cast that includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, Mark Wahlberg, and Martin Sheen (just to name a few), and it won four Oscars, including Best Picture.
4. Far And Away, 1992
If you’re looking for a movie with a bit of romance this St. Patrick’s Day, go for the film Far and Away. Directed by Ron Howard and starring Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, the movie follows two Irish immigrants looking to get rich in 1890s America. Once they settle on American soil, Cruise’s character becomes a bare-hands boxer, and the couple faces a whole lot of trouble from there. Far and Away is perfect for a St. Paddy’s date night and is a must for Tom Cruise fans.
5. Leprechaun, 1993
If you’re looking to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with some laughs and horror, Leprechaun is the perfect choice. Released in 1993, the film stars then-newbie Jennifer Aniston in a story about an evil leprechaun on a killing rampage, all to find his pot of gold. The movie is not for the faint of heart and is so cheesy that you can’t help but think it’s funny. It’ great for a party or to watch with a group of friends.
