The premiere of X-Men: Days of Future Past is inching closer, and a new trailer has been released that shows a lot more of what fans can expect from the next installment in the now topsy-turvy, multi-faceted X-Men film universe.
There are still plenty of things up for debate about the franchise. For one, it’s not easy to determine if the X-Men: First Class film was a prequel to the original trilogy, and thus part of the same timeline, or if it was intended as a reboot that didn’t have to tie perfectly into the backstory of the originals. The ending of First Class certainly seemed to suggest it was an alternate timeline, since Professor Xavier and Magneto’s friendship looked ready to end, while the original trilogy shows their close relationship lasting into their grayer, balder years.
The appearance of a young, diamond-skinned Emma Frost in X-Men Origins: Wolverine would also suggest that plots were not intended to be connected at the outset, as an older Emma Frost appears as one of the lead villains in First Class, which chronologically takes place almost twenty years earlier than the Wolverine-focused film. Nonetheless, X-Men: Days of Future Past looks to start tying the intricate web of stories all together.
With a plot involving time travel to encourage a young, bitter, and wounded Charles Xavier, we can expect some hard-to-follow, convoluted points in the story. But, with a star-studded cast bringing back our favorite mutants in droves and getting pitted against one of the X-Men’s most notorious threat — sentinels — there should be plenty of awesome mutant-y goodness to keep us thoroughly distracted from any of the many plot holes or chronology errors almost destined to occur in time-travel stories.
