When it comes to skin care, there are two types of people: those who overdo it and those who underdo it. Generally, females occupy the former category and males the latter, but not always. There are plenty of us plain-and-simple girls who cannot be bothered by a complicated regimen.

Whether your vanity counter could pass for a mini Sephora pop-up shop for all the products and potions it boasts, or you only use a bar of soap, we’re all looking for the right balance of important skin care products for our daily routine.

Beauty expert David Pirrotta of David Pirrotta Brands has the answer. He’s spent countless hours in the company of a veritable alphabet of brands through his 20-plus years of experience in the industry — he even cut his teeth on the cosmetics floors at New York City’s Bergdorf Goodman and Barneys New York. So, you could say, he’s seen it all.

Yet, when it comes down to putting your best face forward, he says it’s about four simple goals and four types of products to accomplish them. “The goal of any skin care regime is to cleanse, moisturize, protect, and repair,” Pirrotta said. “The most important, and low maintenance, types of products women should use daily are a cleanser, moisturizer, SPF, and a potent eye serum.”

Of course, he points out consistency is key to yielding the best results from this skin care regime. But, that should really be as easy as one, two, three, and four.

1. Cleanser

Cleansing your face can be more complicated than it sounds, as finding the right product is a bit like a Goldilocks’ quest for the porridge that’s “just right.” It’s important to adequately wash the skin and remove any impurities and makeup without stripping the skin of essential oils or disrupting its protective function, Pirrotta says. He recommends a product like the VERSO Foaming Cleanser, which has a soothing and purifying formula that’s suitable for daily use. It leaves the skin translucent and clean without any residue. Another option to explore is Tatcha Pure One-Step Camellia Cleansing Oil, which is geisha-inspired and blends camellia and rice bran oils for a gentle, two-in-one makeup remover and cleanser that melts away even waterproof makeup.

2. Moisturizer

It’s important to always follow facial cleansing with a moisturizing product to restore and nourish the skin. Pirrotta likes to keep it in the same brand family when it comes to moisturizers with the VERSO Day Cream. Why this cream? It not only moisturizes, but it also boasts a Retinol 8 complex that helps to activate the skin and stimulate its natural production of collagen, thus reversing the signs of aging. Plus, the addition of Vitamin B3 increases skin luminosity, which basically means you’ll look nothing short of freshly radiant and glowing.

The cream also contains sun filters that can help protect the skin from premature aging. It’s like a one-stop shop. However, there is much to be said for a few drugstore moisturizers that do a mighty fine job. In fact, some beauty editors swear by them — think Aveeno’s Clear Complexion Daily Moisturizer or Neutrogena’s Oil-Free Moisture.

3. Sun protection

SPF is a VIP when it comes to a solid skin care regimen. Pirrotta likes Drunk Elephant’s Umbra Sheer Physical Defense SPF 30 to help fight signs of aging. And it leaves a glowing finish. The paraben- and sulfate-free formula uses all-natural zinc oxide for sun protection, and it is also infused with sunflower shoot extract, astaxanthin (a powerful carotenoid), raspberry seed oil, and marula oil to leave skin healthy and protected without any residue or greasiness.

4. Repair products

The sensitive eye area can use some extra TLC when it comes to skin care, particularly since it’s prone to show signs of aging. Fight the crow’s feet with an eye serum that’s specially designed to diminish the look of eye puffiness and dark circles while helping to prevent wrinkles. The VERSO Super Eye Serum is firming and smoothing, Pirotta says, and it’s formulated with specific amino acids to help to increase the skin’s natural production of collagen and reverse the signs of aging.

Mother Nature can also be a great resource. Aveda harnesses the vital energy of plants with the Botanical Kinetics Energizing Eye Crème, which combines licorice root and coffee bean extracts to diminish darkness and puffiness for a bright, rested outlook.
