If you’re familiar with a burning feeling in your chest and a sour taste in your mouth after your meals, then you know the pain and discomfort that comes with having heartburn. While not a life-threatening condition, your heartburn can throw off your entire day and make you wonder what you ate that caused such a severe reaction.
Though it sounds like there’s something amiss with your heart by the name, heartburn actually has nothing to do with your heart — the issues start with your digestion. RxList explains that heartburn is a symptom of GERD, gastroesophageal reflux disease, and stomach acid and digestive fluids entering back up the esophagus cause that burning feeling. This can cause inflammation and damage the lining of the esophagus over time, and certain foods and drinks that we consume can be a major contributing factor in why heartburn occurs. Luckily, these five remedies will help heartburn sufferers feel relief from their symptoms, no matter how debilitating the reflux feels. You’ll have to give them a try.
1. Eat a little baking soda
It almost sounds too simple to be helpful, but baking soda has a neutralizing effect that can help alleviate that burning feeling that makes heartburn painful. According to Everyday Roots, baking soda, or sodium bicarbonate, is a base substance with a pH higher than 7.0. When you drink a spoonful of baking soda mixed with water, it neutralizes stomach acid so you don’t feel a painful burning sensation if your acid reflux is causing you serious issues. Once your pain is gone, you can evaluate your lifestyle and what you ate recently to better determine the source of your heartburn.
To perform this remedy, all you need is a teaspoon of baking soda and a glass of water that’s no more than eight ounces. Stir in the baking soda and drink the mixture for immediate relief. If you find that your symptoms start to creep back with this method, you can drink this mixture again, but just be sure not to consume over seven teaspoons of baking soda in 24 hours, as this can cause nausea and swelling from the high salt content.
