7 Practical Healthy-Eating Tips Fit Celebrities Follow

Ever wonder how celebrities always look so fabulously fit? Many of Hollywood’s healthiest stars don’t follow a strict diet, but rather, have a few guidelines they abide by to stay on track. In-shape stars such as Kelly Ripa, Jennifer Aniston, and Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting, abide by these seven healthy-eating tips, which are practical, easy to follow, and will help you make good food choices without feeling deprived. 1. Practice moderation

Kelly Ripa is a big believer in moderation. “I don’t diet, because I feel moderation is key. My guilty pleasure is french fries,” Ripa told Self. That mindset is a great way to avoid feeling deprived while on a diet, Ashley Koff, R.D., explained to Self. In fact, Koff warns that if you deem a food as off limits, you might end up craving it and eventually overeat.

Woman’s Day adds you should never look at food as the enemy or label certain things as “good” or “bad.” Instead, follow a diet that finds a spot for healthy foods and your favorite treats. This way you can stick to your healthy-eating goals without feeling guilty or deprived. Remember, progress — not perfection — is key when you’re dieting!

2. Eat less meat

“Not eating meat [keeps me slim]. Meat…is a big calorie packer,” actress Olivia Wilde told Self. You don’t even have to become a full-time vegetarian in order to benefit from this healthy-eating tip. Mayo Clinic explains that people who simply cut back on meat and eat more plant-based foods will end up consuming fewer calories and less fat.

Interestingly, the average American who switches to a reduced-meat or vegetarian diet will lose weight, see improvements in their overall health, and look healthier, nutritionist Steven Masley, MD, said in a health article via ABC News. If you’d like to slowly ease your way into following a vegetarian diet, start by serving meat-free meals one day each week.

3. Keep unhealthy foods out of the house

If there are certain junk foods you can’t seem to resist, don’t keep them around. Katy Perry told Women’s Health that when it comes to food, she’s all about following an “out of sight, out of mind” mentality. The two things she keeps far away from her: fried foods and potato chips. Instead of surrounding herself with junk food, the superstar stocks up on grilled chicken, soy milk, and anything organic.

If you’d like to replace your unhealthy, preservative-riddled foods with healthy options, Parents suggests stocking your fridge with fruit, hummus, yogurt, salad, veggies, tortillas, and low-fat cheese. When it comes to your pantry, make sure you have plenty of whole-grain crackers, pasta, and bread, beans, brown rice, nuts and seeds, and nut butters.

4. Buy your produce at farmers markets

Jennifer Garner can often be found at farmers markets buying fresh, local, and organic produce, according to Marie Claire. In addition, E! adds that other farmers market frequenters include Anne Hathaway, Alessandra Ambrosio, Naomi Watts, and Shay Mitchell. Prevention explains that farmers market produce plays a key role in healthy eating and your overall health, because produce sold at farmers markets has more nutrients than the fruits and veggies sold at supermarkets.

This is because much of the produce sold at supermarkets is shipped and packaged and is often sold almost a week after it was picked. Farmers market produce, however, is much fresher; Prevention notes that cutting down on the time between when the food was harvested and when you consume it is a great way to ensure you’re getting as many nutrients as possible.

5. Eat (or drink) as many greens as you can

Many of Hollywood’s svelte stars consume as many greens as they possibly can. Alicia Silverstone, for example, told Marie Claire that she doesn’t diet. Instead, she simply focuses on eating healthy, plant-based foods, such as kale and Swiss chard, which she says give her a clear, vibrant complexion. Country singer Miranda Lambert also makes sure to eat plenty of greens, but you won’t find her loading up on salads and sautéed vegetables. Lambert revealed to Women’s Health that she doesn’t like vegetables, so she gets her daily dose of greens in the form of juice. “With the juice, I feel like I’m getting straight-up vitamins and good food. So if I don’t eat anything else green that day, I’ve got my green in.”

6. Drink plenty of water

Guzzling water is essential for your overall health — just ask Jennifer Aniston! “I always try to sleep for at least eight hours a night and, of course, water, water, water! I drink 100 ounces of Smartwater every day,” she told Shape. Maria Menounos is another in-shape celebrity who works hard to stay hydrated. Interestingly, she prefers hot water over cold. Drinking hot water fills you up, detoxifies your body, and helps your stomach digest food, Menounos said to PopSugar. In addition, Jillian Michaels explained to Health that not only does drinking water curb your hunger, but it also boosts your metabolism by up to 3%. Michaels’ advice, “Drink water until your pee looks like lemonade.”

7. Take a break during your meals

Rather than quickly devouring her meals, Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting gives her food time to digest before finishing her plate. “I try to eat half. If you take a break for 10 minutes and drink some water, you’re full. And if you’re still hungry, fine, keep eating. But you’re not going to be,” she told Women’s Health. Eating slowly and taking a break is a great way to cut down on calories, Web MD explains.

It takes approximately 20 minutes from the time you start eating for your brain to signal that it’s full, meaning that when you take a break during your meal, it gives your brain time to send out signals of fullness before you polish off your plate. E! News host Giuliana Rancic shares Cuoco-Sweeting’s sentiments. In fact, she told Shape that she focuses on eating her meals very slowly. “I am known to scarf down my food and often eat standing up because I’m so busy and now I’ve learned to be mindful by putting my fork down between bites and really savor and appreciate the food that I’m putting in my body.”
