The value of various food items can be subjective and may vary based on where you live – and even more so, who’s cooking each item. A gourmet pasta dinner from your home kitchen comes with a cost of no more than $20 or so, but go out to a middle-range restaurant like Olive Garden and buy that same dinner for your family, and you’re probably going to pay closer to $70. Go upscale, and you could pay upward of $150 for a single Italian dinner for your family. For some people, that’s an entire week’s grocery bill.
Which meal tastes better, your home-cooked pasta dish that is tailored to your individual tastes or the upscale restaurant meal? Some of the most expensive foods are rare or exotic, some use higher-quality ingredients, and other expensive foods are prepared by well-known chefs.
Using the Guinness Book of World Records, coupled with other resources, we found some of the world’s most expensive foods. We wanted to know what makes these foods so expensive and, more importantly, how these expensive foods taste.
Hamburgers are considered a safe menu choice for many restaurant goers. If someone can’t decide on a menu item, he or she may choose a hamburger because it’s familiar (like the picture above) and a hamburger is generally a hard dish to mess up. The most expensive hamburger, however, costs a shocking $5,000, and as of 2011, Juicys Outlaw Grill, based in Corvallis, Oregon, served the pricey American classic.
What’s so special about this burger? Well, for starters, it’s huge. It weighs 777 pounds and is made with locally grown produce. Juicys has overall good reviews, and the response to the burger was positive.
The FleurBurger 5000 also comes with a $5,000 price tag. Crafted by top chef Hubert Keller with Wagyu beef, foie grass, and truffles, this burger is the epitome of quality. Your burger also comes paired with a 1995 Petrus wine and two Ichendorf Brunello glasses that you can take home. The burger has mixed reviews: some love it, while others say it is not all it is cracked up to be.
Pizza is usually thought of as a casual food — a dinner served on Friday nights when you don’t feel like cooking, or something you order for fun. It’s simply dough, sauce, cheese, and toppings. Generally, pizza is simple and straight to the point. We often think of pizza more like the image above, and from a neighborhood pizza joint, you can usually buy a large pie for no more than $20 or so.
The most expensive pizzas in the world, though, costs hundreds of dollars, and they are not your run-of-the-mill pepperoni-and-cheese or supreme pizza pies. The Guinness record is for “a thin-crust, wood fire-baked pizza topped with onion puree, white truffle paste, fontina cheese, baby mozzarella, pancetta, cep mushrooms, freshly picked wild mizuna lettuce and garnished with fresh shavings of a rare Italian white truffle.” Served at Gordon Ramsey’s Maze Restaurant in London, this dish comes with a cost of around $175, depending on the season and the supply of truffles. Most diners had positive things to say about Maze Restaurant and the taste of this pizza.
Another expensive pizza is the $1,000 lobster, caviar, and creme fraiche-topped pizza from Nino’s Bellissima restaurant in New York. That menu received an above-average 3.5 out of 5 stars.
3. Most Expensive Sandwich
When you think of a sandwich, do you think of a BLT like the one above? Maybe a Reuben or a chicken club? Whatever your choice of sandwich is, odds are, you don’t picture a sandwich that costs $1,000. Available on the menu at the Cliveden, Buckinghamshire, U.K., as of 2007, a $200 sandwich was created by chef Daniel Galmiche.
“Sandwiched between three slices of 24-hour fermented sour-dough bread is Iberico ham, poulet de Bresse, white truffles, quail eggs, semi-dried Italian tomatoes,” according to the Guinness Book of World Records. This establishment has received excellent reviews overall, with 4.5 out of 5 star reviews on Trip Advisor. Those who have tried the sandwich also say that it tastes unique, yet delicious.
A Daily Mail publication had this to say about the sandwich: “The chicken was wonderfully moist and delicious, and the ham was superb. The earthy taste of the truffles was intense. But the strong flavours were offset by the sweetness of the tomatoes and the lightness of the quails’ eggs.”
4. Most Expensive Dessert
Would you pay $25,000 for a dessert? The Guinness Book of World Records declared the Frrrozen Haute Chocolate ice cream sundae the most expensive dessert in the world. The dessert was added to the menu of the Serendipity 3 restaurant in New York in late 2007.
In addition to containing a blend of 28 cocoas, the dish is decorated with edible gold, and at the base of the serving dish sits an 18 karat gold bracelet with 1 carat of diamonds. You also eat the luxury gold and diamond decorated dessert with a gold spoon. The few reviews we’ve found for the record-setting dessert say that it tastes delicious, and for a price of around half of the median household income, one would certainly hope so.
5. Most Expensive Sushi
Chef Angelito Araneta Jr. created a gem of a sushi dish when he crated his nearly $2,000 luxury plate. The dish contains five pieces of nigiri wrapped in 24-karat gold leaves; the plate is also garnished with diamonds. It holds the Guinness record for the most expensive sushi in the world.
The plating of the dish is absolutely beautiful: Each piece of sushi looks like a piece of jewelry. Finances Online had this to say about the sushi: “Angelito Araneta Jr.’s golden sushi is made of Japanese rice, Norwegian pink salmon, sea cucumber, mango, foie gras, crab, wild saffron and butter mayonnaise. Adding more flavor to the dish are Italian balsamic vinegar and Muscovado sugar.” The few reviews we’ve found of the dish say it is also delicious.
