National Doughnut Day has a bit more historical background than many food freebie days. During World War I, the Salvation Army sent volunteers to France to make doughnuts for the troops on the front lines. In 1917 the Salvation Army decided to name the first Friday in June National Doughnut Day as a way to remember those volunteers.
The freebies come with a catch, though. Dunkin’ Donuts is requiring a beverage purchase, while Tim Hortons wants you like their Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) page and bring in a printed-out coupon.
Dunkin’ Donuts and Krispy Kreme are using the holiday as an opportunity to help expand into international markets. Dunkin’ will be celebrating National Doughnut Day in its stores in 31 countries, and is looking to add between 400 and 500 stores overseas this year. Krispy Kreme is looking to have 900 international stores up and operating by the beginning of 2017. Both companies are also planning to add more stores in the U.S. this year as well.
