NBC Universal’s DIRECTV Deal, Travelzoo Hit by DOT Fine: Consumer Business Update

Comcast Corporation’s (NASDAQ:CMCSA) NBCUniversal is completing a new distribution arrangement with the satellite broadcaster DIRECTV (NASDAQ:DTV), say inside sources. The move marks the latest in a series of new distribution contracts for the former with the biggest domestic providers of pay-television. Earlier in November, it made a similar deal with Cablevision Systems Corporation (NYSE:CVC), a New York-based cable operator with more than 3 million subscribers. Currently, DIRECTV boasts almost 20 million.

The United States Department of Transportation has socked the online ticket agent Travelzoo (NASDAQ:TZOO) with a fine of $50,000 for its failing to properly notify consumers when their flights were being operated under a code-sharing arrangement. The firm was also directed to cease and desist from future such violations. DOT Secretary Ray LaHood commented that, “Passengers deserve to know which airline will be operating their flight before they purchase their tickets. We will continue to take enforcement action against airlines and ticket agents when they fail to comply with our code-sharing disclosure rules.”

On Monday, Starbucks (NASDAQ:SBUX) commemorated the debut of its 100th store by opening the first store in Beijing that is led by certified Coffee Masters. At the same time, the firm celebrated the initiation of Starbucks Coffee University which serves in its talent development process.
