Target Takes First Step in Holiday Shopping Wars

Black Friday is starting earlier each year, and this year Target (NYSE:TGT) is getting a jump on the big shopping event by announcing stores will open at midnight on Thanksgiving Day. That’s four hours earlier than last year. Target’s spokeswoman Susan Kahn said the change was in response to customer demand.

Target (NYSE:TGT) is among many retailers (NYSE:XRT) who are pushing the limit of “Black Friday.” Sears (NASDAQ:SHLD) and Kmart opened for Thanksgiving Day for the first time last year, while Gap (NYSE:GPS), Old Navy, and Banana Republic have been opening on turkey day since 2009. Toys R Us will open at 10pm on Thanksgiving. Last year almost all of Wal-mart’s (NYSE:WMT) non-24 hour stores were open by midnight on Thanksgiving evening.
