Although the recent heat wave and drought across the United States seems unbearable, many Internet users flocked to travel and leisure related websites as summer officially began.
According to a new web activity report by comScore (NASDAQ:SCOR), a leader in measuring several aspects of the digital world, Americans had a strong desire to book travel plans in June and caused a spike in web traffic at Ground/Cruise, Hotels/Resorts and other travel subcategories. Many visitors also increased time spent on fun activities.
“June got off to a strong start with significant traffic gains seen at Travel and Retail sites as Americans readied their free time for the long-awaited summer months,” explained Jeff Hackett, executive vice president of comScore. “With more leisure time for game playing on their hands, nearly 15 million people visited Zynga (NASDAQ:ZNGA) in June, representing a 103 percent gain to rank as the top-gaming property.” Zynga drew 7.3 million visitors in May.
The top-gaining category last month was Ground/Cruise, jumping 9 percent to 14.26 million visitors, compared to 13.03 million in May. Carnival Cruise Lines (NYSE:CCL) witnessed nearly 2 million visitors in June, while Royal Caribbean Cruises (NYSE:RCL) had 1.2 million visitors, representing a 7 percent increase. Hotel and Resort sites also ranked among the top gainers with Hilton Hotels and Marriott International (NYSE:MAR) leading the charge with 5.5 million and 5.4 million visitors, respectively. Disney Parks & Travel (NYSE:DIS) saw 4.2 million visitors, up 9 percent from the prior month.
Even though these categories experienced a boost in June, the usual major websites still dominated the web in terms of total visitors. Listed below are the top ten Internet properties for June, based on total unique visitors calculated by comScore.

Microsoft Sites (NASDAQ:MSFT): 166.1 million
Facebook (NASDAQ:FB): 160 million

Ask Network: 88 million
Wikimedia Foundation Sites: 83.2 million
Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL): 81 million
Glam Media: 79.4 million
