Will This Announcement Make Google More Competitive?

Only days before Amazon’s (NASDAQ:AMZN) Web Services-focused re:Invent conference is scheduled to begin, Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) made a serious challenge to the undisputed leader of the cloud infrastructure market by announcing new backup and long-term storage options for its Compute Engine and lowering prices for its computing and storage services.

Is Google a Serious Rival to Amazon?

Google’s Compute Engine, which provides computing infrastructure as a service, was launched in June as preview-only product. When it was released, Google stated that its service would be faster and cheaper than Amazon’s. Yet, even though the service runs on the same data centers servers that power Google search, it has not caught on to the extent that Amazon’s has. And so Google has dropped prices a further 5 percent.
