Will This Gimmick Lead to Windows and Lumia Phone Sales?

Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) is setting up “free-time machines” to promote its Windows Phones in New York, San Francisco, and Chicago in an effort to convince consumers that its phones will create more free time and are more efficient than rival smartphones.

The recently launched Nokia (NYSE:NOK) Lumia 900 and HTC Tital II are a part of Microsoft’s “free-time machines,” essentially offering freebies for meals, personal shoppers, grocery delivery, cleaning, and dog walkers. The promotion even offers personal concierges that handle tasks like waiting in line for a burger. Microsoft’s core strategy is to use the promotion to show consumers how easy and efficient Windows Phones are for tackling personal tasks.

Microsoft, AT&T (NYSE:T), and Nokia are pushing hard to promote Windows Phones to consumers. AT&T promised the biggest launch for the Lumia 900, although many stores were closed for Easter when the phone went on sale. Nokia set up huge ads and a Nicki Minaj concert in Times Square on Friday to promote the phone. For consumers that do not reside in New York, San Francisco, or Chicago, Microsoft is setting up a website to offer promotions.

Smartphones running on Windows 8 have made little headway in the U.S., which is currently a crucial market. Microsoft is relying heavily on the success of the Lumia 900.
