AT&T (NYSE:T) will begin subsidizing the price of Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPad with a two-year contract agreement, mirroring the way wireless provides in the U.S. currently sell the iPhone. This is the first such payment structure for the Apple tablet since it was first launched in 2010, but the new iPad mini and the fourth-generation iPad 4 are not yet available through the offer.
AT&T said in a press release that it would offer a “promotional discount” of $100 to customers buying a new iPad along with a service agreement. The discount can be claimed either on AT&T’s online store or at a brick-and-mortar outlet. The data plan can range from $10 per month to $50 per month individually, or the iPad can be added to one of AT&T’s Mobile Share plans. Grandfathered unlimited data users will be unable to participate in the deal.

The promotion has been created to incentivize holiday shopping, according to AT&T chief marketing officer David Christopher. However, the wireless provider did not mention an end date, only saying that it would continue as long as supplies last. It also did not say how many units of each tablet were being made available.
