Veterans magazine G.I. Jobs has posted its Top 100 Military Friendly Employers list for 2012, and Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) tops the list for the second year running. Amazon has a veteran new-hire rate of 25 percent as well as a team of recruiters dedicated to military hiring and offering assistance developing skills for long-term careers at the company.
Amazon tries to place disabled veterans and military spouses in positions such as at-home customer service representatives. Amazon has reiterated its commitment to veterans over the past several years, and has donated 2,000 Kindles to Operation Homefront, a provider of emergency assistance to service members and their families.

“As we continue to create jobs in the U.S., we want to ensure that our nation’s veterans know that Amazon is a destination where they can turn their unique skill sets into a robust career,” Amazon VP of global customer fulfillment, Dave Clark, said in a statement.
Veteran employment has been a huge issue as the wars in the Middle East wind down. Many competent, skilled veterans are unable to find work despite being well trained because there is no process to translate military certification into civilian certification. The unemployment rate for Gulf War-era II veterans was 10 percent in October 2012.
Amazon isn’t the only company that has recognized the skills and work ethic of veterans. In October, a group of manufacturers aligned themselves with the “Get Skills to Work” coalition, which aims to work with colleges, veterans organizations, and employers to place skilled veterans in advanced manufacturing positions. Manufacturers like General Electric (NYSE:GE), Boeing (NYSE:BA), Alcoa (NYSE:AA), and Lockheed Martin (NYSE:LMT) are trying to place 15,000 veterans into the 600,000 high-tech manufacturing job openings in America.
