The iPhone 5 may only have been on the market for three weeks, but the latest Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) smartphone is already beating key rival Samsung’s flagship device in one aspect. According to a new report by mobile analytics firm Chitika Insights, the iPhone 5 is now accounting for more web traffic than the Galaxy S III, which has been on sale for more than three months.
Isolated from other devices and put head-to-head, the iPhone 5 is accounting for 56 percent of web pages while the Galaxy S III is bringing in 44 percent. “Only 18 days since the public release of the iPhone 5, the newest Apple device has overtaken the Galaxy S III in terms of web traffic volume,” Chitika said. “Record-breaking sales numbers, along with new 4G browsing speeds which encourage data usage, are the most likely explanation for this tremendous growth.”

According to Chitika the head-to-head comparison “emphasizes iPhone users still being the most active — and hence marketable — users of the mobile web.”
Chitika conducted its user agent analysis through mobile ad impressions between October 3 and October 9.
The Galaxy S III, which launched in the U.S. on June 21, has seen red-hot sales and outdid the iPhone 4S in the U.S. in August, with reports that it was the top-selling phone for Verizon (NYSE:VZ), Sprint (NYSE:S), and T-Mobile and the second highest seller for AT&T (NYSE:T). Samsung believes the phone will reach more than 30 million in global sales by the year’s end. Total global smartphone shipments are expected to reach 567 million this year and almost double in 2016.
