Everyone knew the clash between Microsoft’s (NASDAQ:MSFT) Xbox One and Sony’s (NYSE:SNE) Playstation 4 was going to be a rough one, and the addition of immensely popular titles to each consoles roster doesn’t make the battle any less tense. The addition of the massively successful Titanfall to Xbox One’s arsenal may create a little turning of the tides.
On a price point basis, Sony has had the advantage from the very beginning. At $100 cheaper than the Xbox One, the PS4 has had luck in sales, topping it worldwide with some 6 million units sold as of March 2, reports CNET. Though the PS4 started off somewhat shaky in the U.S., it did have to contend with the demands fo fifty-three markets, while the Xbox One was only sold in thirteen countries at the time, according to Time.
In January and February, the PS4 topped the Xbox One in unit sales, but Time noted that the Xbox One closed a large portion of the sales gap between the two during February, and some of that may have been due to the anticipation of Titanfall. In January, the PS4 was reported to have sold twice as many units as the Xbox One. In February, the gap in sales fell to only tens of thousands, according to Time. CNET reported that Microsoft’s Xbox One sales were up to 90 percent of Sony’s PS4 sales based on NPD data.
This month, the sales parity may get flipped on its head. With Xbox One sales growing as much as they did in February — well before the March 11 launch of Titanfall — it seems only likely that the Xbox One will step even higher in sales status for March.
