After putting in another strong year, the domestic automotive industry is reportedly on track to end on par with its performance in 2012, as December’s auto sales ended strong for some but more as a whisper for others. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, however, as Cars.com reminds us that December 2012 was a pretty good month.
Pickup sales stalled slightly despite some mixed numbers from the usual leaders, as the segment fell 1.4 percent in December over the same month of the year prior. Transaction prices per vehicle picked up $882 in the first half of December against December 2012.
Here is how the top-selling individual models stacked up for the last month of the year. For those who have been following, things fell largely where they have been throughout the year, with few surprises. Notably, Japanese brands seemed to struggle a bit as the year ended.
10. Ford Fusion
The Ford (NYSE:F) Fusion spent 2013 weaving in and out of the top 10 but finished the year on a strong note with 24,408 models sold, a 26.6 percent surge over the December prior. The Fusion finished the year 22.4 percent up on 2012, with 295,280 units sold.
9. Ford Escape
Like the Fusion, the Ford Escape made a couple of appearances on the best-seller list throughout the year but took advantage of Ford’s late-year push and was able to move 24,462 units for a 21.5 percent gain over December 2012. For the year, Ford moved 295,993 Escapes, up 13.4 percent over the year prior.
8. Nissan Altima
The 24,816 units of the Altima that Nissan (NSANY.PK) moved in December were enough to rank the car in eighth for the month, representing a 3.5 percent increase in sales over December of the year prior. Over 2013, Nissan sold 320,723 Altimas, putting sales at a 5.9 percent gain for the year.
7. Honda CR-V
Honda’s (NYSE:HMC) popular crossover utility vehicle proved itself to be a consistent performer throughout the year, ending with 28,759 units sold in December, an 11.8 percent sales gain. Honda sold 303,904 CR-Vs in 2013 for an annual gain of 7.9 percent.
6. Honda Civic
Honda sold exactly 29,000 Civic sedans during December, which put the compact at a 12.4 decline over the December previous. For the year, Honda sold 336,180 Civic vehicles, up 5.7 percent, despite the year-end dip.
5. Toyota Camry
Ordinarily among the top three best-selling vehicles, the Toyota (NYSE:TM) Camry slid back to fifth in December, having moved 29,964 cars, a slump of 4.6 percent from December 2012. However, the 408,484 units moved for 2013 left Camry sales up 0.9 percent over the year prior.
4. Honda Accord
The Honda Accord managed to unseat the Camry as the best-selling car of the month, with 32,321 models moved, or up 9.8 percent over December 2012. Honda saw 366,378 Accords move for 2013, putting the model’s sales on a 10.5 percent rise from the previous year.
3. Ram Pickup
The 2013 Ram 1500 had a sales year that many wish for, having consistently posted rather significant gains over the period of the year prior. December was no different: the Ram sold 33,405 units for a 10.9 percent increase. For the year, Ram sold 355,673 units, putting it up 21.2 percent over 2012.
2. Chevrolet Silverado
Even a 16 percent dip in sales couldn’t slow down the Chevrolet (NYSE:GM) Silverado in December, which took its usual No. 2 seat ahead of the Ram with 42,593 units sold in December for a total of 480,414 units moved during the year. That leaves the Silverado up 14.8 percent for 2013.
1. Ford F-150
Ford’s reign continued right to the end, as the F-150 blew away the competition with 74,592 vehicles sold. This translates into an 8.4 percent gain over 2012 and makes for a cumulative sales figure of 763,402 for the year, an 18.3 percent gain over the year prior.
