The team over at iSeeCars.com recently decided to use its vast trove of data — information on some 25 million cars listed for sale on the site in the past 12 months — to determine which cities had the highest percentages of fuel-efficient cars. The site defines best MPG cars as eco-friendly vehicles getting 30 miles per gallon or more.
“The top three cities with the highest percentage of eco-friendly cars are all in California, perhaps not too surprising, since the state has some of the best incentives for buying hybrid and electric cars,” said Phong Ly, the CEO of iSeeCars.
Here are the top 10 cities that feature the highest rates of fuel-efficient vehicles, according to the report by iSeeCars.
10. Miami-Fort Lauderdale, Florida
Just making it into the top 10 are Miami and Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where 6.5 percent of the cars catalogued by iSeeCars were determined to be fuel efficient, with a combined mileage rating of 30 miles per gallon or greater.
9. Atlanta, Georgia
Atlanta doesn’t often come across as an eco-friendly pioneer, but the city manages to pull into ninth place, with a 6.6 percent rate of cars deemed to be fuel efficient.
8. Washington, D.C.
Amid the armored limos and the high-end luxury cars and SUVs, Washington, D.C., lands in eighth place: 6.7 percent of the cars in the region manage 30 miles per gallon or more combined.
7. Tampa-St. Petersburg, Florida
Tampa and St. Petersburg, Florida, come in at No. 7, as 7.1 percent of cars in the area manage a combined rating of 30 miles per gallon or more.
6. Phoenix, Arizona
Interestingly enough, Phoenix is tied with the fifth-place finisher, with a 7.2 percent rate of fuel-efficient cars on the market.
5. Seattle, Washington
As noted previously, in the Seattle and Tacoma area of Washington, 7.2 percent of the cars for sale achieve a combined 30 miles per gallon or more, according to iSeeCars data.
4. Orlando-Daytona Beach, Florida
Home to the House of Mouse and Cape Canaveral, Orlando is also home to the fourth highest rate of fuel-efficient cars, with 7.7 percent.
3. Sacramento-Stockton-Modesto, California
In the Sacramento area of California, about 7.9 percent of the cars posted for sale fell above the 30 mile per gallon threshold, and the state rounds out the top three locales.
2. Los Angeles, California
Los Angeles has a rate of 8.8 percent, good enough for second place, according to iSeeCars’s data. Despite the city’s less-than-sterling reputation for smog and air quality, Los Angeles features one of the highest rates of vehicles that are considered to be fuel efficient.
1. San Francisco, California
With 9.5 percent of its cars achieving 30 miles per gallon or greater, San Francisco takes the top spot in the country for fuel-efficient vehicles.
