2019 Jeep Compass: What’s New in Year 3 of the Redesign
Back when the Jeep Patriot and Compass both roamed the roads, they were mostly considered unreliable vehicles that couldn’t hold their value. But Jeep went back to the drawing board, ditched the Patriot, and released an all-new Compass for 2017.
While weak spots remain, Jeep has gone out of its way to make the redesigned model more comfortable and attractive. That mission continues for the 2019 model year, as the automaker hopes to capitalize on the significant sales momentum Compass had in August.
Here’s everything new you’ll find in the Compass in this third year since the redesign.
1. Compass Sport Upland special edition
While the Compass is no Wrangler on the trail, you can still add four-wheel drive and other features to toughen up the base Sport model ($21,295) that comes with a manual transmission. In the Upland special edition package available on 2019 models, the upgrade includes 17-inch Trailhawk wheels and a front-suspension skid plate to increase the rugged factor.
Otherwise, the package is mostly cosmetic, with a gloss-black grille and roof, matte-black tow hooks, silver interior accents, and Trailhawk mats. Black fog lamp bezels and badges continue the theme, with contrast from a chrome exhaust tip. Jeep hasn’t priced this package yet.
2. Compass Limited with High Altitude package
Your choices for options and packages increase significantly when you move up to the Compass Limited trim (starting at $27,795). For 2019, this model has the option of the High Altitude appearance package. It includes 19-inch Satin Gloss Granite wheels with matching grille surrounds, LED lights, and a gloss-black roof.
Inside, you’ll find gunmetal interior flourishes, tungsten stitching, and an upgraded (8.4-inch) infotainment system. Pricing is still forthcoming from Jeep on this package as well, so you may have to wait until later in the model year for availability.
3. Other additions for 2019
Otherwise, you’ll find most of the additions to the 2019 Compass in the details. Sting Grey is the new color, adaptive cruise control gets added to the Advanced Safety package, and a new Premium Lighting Group will try to improve upon this model’s subpar headlight ratings.
In the lower-trim (Sport and Latitude) models, a 7-inch UConnect radio will be the standard infotainment setup.
4. Price changes
Pricing for the Sport model and Latitude ($24,595) rose $200 for 2019. Meanwhile, Limited models saw just a $100 price bump and Trailhawk ($28,795) models stayed the same.
The model with the biggest price change was the Altitude, which may be discontinued before the end of the model year. At press time, 2018 models were listed at $25,590 while a ’19 Altitude started at $25,915 ($325 more). The Sun & Wheel trim will not continue into the 2019 model year.
5. Fuel economy and safety ratings
There are no changes to Compass’s EPA fuel ratings for the new model year. Every model stands at 25 mpg combined except for the base model with manual transmission and front-wheel drive (26 mpg).
While Compass did not win any safety award for 2018, it did ace every crash test and offers superior advanced safety tech. With the new lighting options, it has a chance to improve its ratings in this department. But we’ll have to wait for the verdict from the IIHS later in the year.
Jeep has already begun marketing the 2019 Compass and inventory should be arriving in dealerships as of mid-October.
