3 Coolest Cars From the New James Bond Movie
Da-da-da-da-da-da-da… Cue the Bond theme, boys, it’s time to go kick some evil crony keisters. And what better way to do it than from behind the wheel of a badass British automobile brought to you by the team over at Jaguar/Land Rover. Featured vehicles for the new James Bond movie, Spectre, have been unveiled with behind-the-scenes details, and from the looks of things, the custom Jaguar C-X75, Range Rover Sport SVR (which we drove and loved), and Land Rover Defender are all making a North American debut during the U.S. television premiere of the 2015 Jaguar Land Rover British Academy Britannia Awards.
Not into the whole Britannia thing, but still want to catch a glimpse of these beauties in person? All three vehicles are set to be on public display at Orange County Cars and Coffee in Costa Mesa, California on October 31. So if you love going to Cars and Coffee like we do, and happen to live out that way, get your tush down there this weekend to check these beauties out, and send me some pictures on Twitter so I can drool at the breakfast table.
Not your thing to get up early on a Saturday morning to stand in a parking lot to look at cars? You can still see the stunning, insanely orange Jaguar C-X75 at the upcoming Art of Performance Tour in Los Angeles this November, where you can ogle the car up close, and drive the all-new XE line and F-Pace luxury SUV later that same day. With seven stops slated in major U.S. cities such as Miami, Chicago, and New York, Jaguar fans across America will get a chance to check out the latest and greatest from the British brand, as millions of luxury enthusiasts anxiously wait to see what is in store for them next.
But sadly many of you won’t be able to make it to any of these events, and the closest you will get to checking these insane machines out is by going to see the 24th 007 film in theaters — still a far cry from getting to know these cars on a deeper level. So in order to give you the inside scoop on all three of these awesome automobiles, we’ve worked with Jaguar/Land Rover to get you a cheat sheet on the automotive stars of Spectre, all of which are heavily modified, and can be made espionage-ready at a moment’s notice. So pull up a chair, grab a martini, loosen that tie, and let’s get down to some MI6-level stats.
Land Rover Discovery
The heavily modded Defender vehicles seen here were constructed by the Special Operations division of Land Rover, and have been outfitted with everything from one-off fuel cells for elongated shoot times in the Austrian Alps to 37-inch diameter off-road tires for tackling extreme terrain and adding to their imposing stance. Custom roll cages have been added for safety and to prevent chassis flex.
If this truck looks familiar it should: This isn’t its first tango in a Bond flick. The Double Cab Pick Up incarnation of the Defender 110 first made its 007 debut back in 2012, when field agent Eve Moneypenny tore through the streets of Istanbul in the opening sequence of Skyfall.
Other interesting add-ons to these sinister-looking Defenders are the round LED lights, exoskeleton caging/carriage racks, massive winches, and the use of braided ropes. These monster trucks may not be the most fuel-efficient things on the planet, but when it comes to overcoming the elements, these modified versions sure as hell have our vote for off-road truck of the year!
Imagine our joy when we found out that the most insane supercar concept that Jaguar has ever come out with would be featured in the latest Bond flick. Now picture us just a few months prior, sobbing over the kitchen sink, wholeheartedly lamenting the fact that this gorgeous, 1.6-liter dual-boosted (turbocharged and supercharged) four-cylinder, hybridized slice of sexiness would never come to fruition. The C-X75 was slated to have a powerplant that gave us 502 horsepower from the gasoline side, and 348 more from the electric portion, thus making it 850 horses strong altogether… but sadly it was never meant to be.
Nevertheless, having a massive budget and a close working relationship with Jaguar does have its merits. After expressing their interest in the concept car, the production studio was awarded with what you see here: A revamped, Bond-ready reincarnation of the C-X75. Ditching the hybrid side of the equation in favor of a petrol-powered drivetrain, the C-X75 was gutted, caged, reinforced, and tested to its limits to withstand all of the torturous terrain you typically see in a Bond chase scene.
Its anti-lock brakes and power steering have been removed, the suspension has been redesigned to allow more travel, and the entire vehicle has been outfitted with a giant skidplate to protect the car’s costly undercarriage. The C-X75 has its time in the limelight during a car chase through the streets of Rome at night, as the film’s villain chases Bond, who drives an Aston Martin DB10. As with all studio vehicles, duplicates of the car had to be made, all of which were built in collaboration with race car specialist Williams Advanced Engineering in Oxfordshire, England.
Range Rover Sport SVR
Remember when I said that the Range Rover Sport SVR may have been the best car I have ever driven? That statement still stands true, as I have yet to find a better vehicle for my lifestyle and driving habits. You know what else is interesting? Bond girls love the SVR as well, because while the one I got ahold of had 550 horsepower and a gorgeous blue shell, the 007 version is all black and sports even… more… power.
Blending together some of the attributes found in the previous two vehicles, the SVR in the film gets a ton of engine upgrades in order to make it even faster, and a mountain of off-road flare to keep stunt drivers firmly in control when up in the Austrian Alps. With its additional fuel tanks, specialized caging, meaty snow tires, and horizontal LED light bars, this is one Range Rover you won’t want to miss seeing in person.
