5 Things We Learned About the 2017 Jaguar XE
As a car culture, we can’t afford to let the sedan almost go extinct like the station wagon did, and automakers are working overtime to make sure that our interest stays focused on them. It seems like everywhere we look, there’s talk about sedan sales remaining sluggish at best, which boggles the mind considering this chassis is the quintessential automobile one typically thinks of when you hear the word “car.”
Jaguar is one of those car creators that has zero interest in letting the four-door saloon go to the grave, and while it may have just unleashed its first-ever crossover, in order to finally appease the masses, it’s the recent release of two all-new sedans that will carry the weight. While the supercharged XF astounded us out in Sedona last winter, it’s the little XE brother that stands to make the biggest splash.
Like the F-Pace, the XE is an all-new area of interest for Jaguar. Smaller sedans have never really been its thing, but the addition of an all-new sport version to the market might be just what the doctor ordered when it comes time to do battle with ze Germans. In order to successfully do so, we have come up with a handful of things that are worth noting about the XE that make it a primary candidate for the entry-level sport sedan crown.
While some may question whether Jaguar has what it takes to topple the mighty A4 or the award winning 3-Series, or if it has addressed all of the reliability issues that have long plagued the badge, the XE exists to dispel those thoughts. It sits right where it should in the entry-level luxury market, both in price and proportion, and although it may not show up on every luxury buyer’s radar as a reason to go British, it damn well should. Here are five great reasons why.
1. Pick your powerplant
Optioning out a Jaguar to fit your driving style is one of the primary reasons why you buy one, and in the XE it all starts with the powertrain. Buyers can opt for either a 340-horsepower supercharged V6 out of the XF, or a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-banger that puts down 240 ponies depending on what you want out of your average commute and the police presence in your area. For those of you who want something a little more efficient, and prefer low-end grunt over top-end ferocity, the 180-horsepower turbo-diesel four-cylinder option has 318 foot-pounds of torque on tap, and gets fuel economy that borders on hybrid territory.
2. Enjoy incredible agility in any weather
The XE is designed to adapt to any kind of surface you roll over, so if slow going in the snow is an issue, Jaguar’s Adaptive Surface Response (AdSR) system can evenly distribute power between all four wheels when equipped. On the other end, if the throttle is being bludgeoned and dry road conditions are detected, almost all of the oomph goes to the back for a near rear-wheel drive experience. Coupled with Intelligent Driveline Dynamics (IDD), a series of advanced algorithms help you get every last drop out of each mile, all while giving your Jag as much traction as possible.
3. Luxury doesn’t always have to cost a lot
One of the greatest things about the new cars coming out of Jaguar are the price-points associated with them. The XE does a fantastic job of offering entry level luxury buyers the best bang for the buck, with pricing starting around $35,000 and topping out around $50,000 in R-Sport V6 trim. Naturally, these are all base-level prices, and outfitting one with the accessories you want will bolster the bottom line pretty quickly, but even then the value associated with this sport sedan is a selling point on its own.
4. The Jaguar XE is lightweight and extremely intelligent
The amount of aluminum Jaguar is using in its modern lineup is mind-boggling. Even key suspension components and entire pieces of the chassis utilize this lightweight alloy, aiding in both strength and efficiency. With an almost perfect 50:50 weight balance, a stiffer core for tighter handling, and a slew of computers that help you get the most fun and fantastic fuel efficiency, there’s little doubt that British engineers are onto something with this aluminum revolution. Toss in a set of adjustable dampers and a multi-link rear setup that can pivot in any direction imaginable to keep you under control, and you’ve got one of the most engaging four-door vehicles on the market today.
5. You’re under the radar and in style
One of the greatest things about the XE is that it carries itself in a very dignified, completely unobtrusive manner when you aren’t eagerly pursuing a traffic violation. Visually, it blends in seamlessly with the rush hour commute, leaving its signature swooping “J” LED running lamps to lead the stylish charge up front to let people know its true pedigree. Pictures don’t really do it justice either, because when you get up close to this thing, you find yourself wondering if the XF sedan or the new XE is more attractive. Add a carbon fiber package, a set of those sensational 20-inch propeller alloy wheels, and a bespoke roof rack that matches your outdoor lifestyle, and you’ve got one balanced little luxury sport sedan.
