Kia Motors (KIMTF.PK) is bringing a rear-wheel drive luxury sedan to the United States in early 2014, according to a report by Automotive News. While it seem as if the car — to be called the K900 — is an American version of the Kia Quoris, the K900 is going to bring competition to at least two luxury brand mainstays operating in the U.S. market.
The pricing will be somewhere in the mid-range of luxury cars, according to dealers briefed by Kia, Automotive News reports. The chairman of national dealers called the new Kia a BMW “7-series value” in a 5-series price range. BMW’s 7-series cars start at $74,500, while the 5-series vehicles start between $49,500 and $60,000.
That includes the 750i, which can generate 445 horsepower on 480 pound-feet of torque with its 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine, which starts at $87,300. According to Automotive News, the most powerful engine in the Kia K900 will generate up to 420 horsepower. With respect to pricey, rear-wheel luxury vehicles, the K900 will likely match up against the Cadillac (NYSE:GM) CTS-V slated to appear in October. General Motors has big things expected for this ride.
The Cadillac CTS-V sedan will reportedly pack a V8 capable of generating 556 horsepower with the ability to go from zero to 60 in 3.9 seconds, according to General Motors’s calculations. This rear-wheel drive vehicle will cost at least $6,000 more than the 2013 CTS models, and the CTS-V sedan starts at $64,900. Kia hopes to start gnawing into that industry market with its U.S. version of the Quoris.
According to Automotive News, the offensive will begin with Super Bowl ads that will showcase the new Kia luxury ride. Football fans are used to seeing automobiles as part of the package on the big game day, and General Motors is also expected to be among the players releasing new ads. Kia has already served notice. The Korean automaker has a luxury performance vehicle worthy of the big stage.
