Porsche is Putting a Diesel Engine in the Macan for U.S. Consumption
For luxury SUV lovers who were hoping for a diesel-powered treat, Porsche is giving you reason to celebrate. According to a new report from Auto News, Porsche is planning on bringing a diesel-powered version of its Macan SUV to American shores within the next year. Not only that, but it won’t break the bank, either. The new Macan entry is expected to retail for less than $60,000.
Not really as affordable as a commuter-class SUV, but reasonable for the luxury segment. The entry-level Macan — the Macan S — has a starting price of just under $51,000, and the Macan Turbo retails for a little more than $73,000. Both of those models are also new to the American market, having just gone on sale five months ago in May.
So what can prospective American buyers expect? The new Macan will reportedly be an Americanized version of the 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 model that European buyers currently enjoy. But Porsche is still in the process of getting the vehicle ready for market, as the company’s engineers are hard at work behind closed doors.
“We are now busy with the development and the engineering,” Andre Oosthuizen, vice president of marketing for Porsche Cars North America Inc., told Auto News. “I can confirm that V-6 diesel offering with about 245 hp.”
There is another Macan, a four-cylinder version, that is currently for sale in the Chinese and UK markets, but it is not set for a debut stateside any time soon.
So what’s behind Porsche’s decision to bring the diesel-powered Macan to the U.S.? Likely shifting consumer demand, as more and more people are looking for more fuel-efficient vehicles as they shop. Diesel-powered vehicles typically have an advantage over traditional petroleum-powered vehicles in that respect, and other companies have been able to take advantage of that rift, like Chevy with its Cruze sedan, and Volkswagen with its variety of diesel-powered cars.
Porsche already offers a few diesel models in the U.S., including its full-size SUV, the Cayenne. Presumably, the Macan would offer a viable alternative to the larger Cayenne, with a starting price about $10,000 less as well. Another question is whether or not there are other diesel-powered competitors to contend with in the states, and if Porsche has a shot of stealing valuable market share.
Well, there are a few options that consumers have, but the Macan looks like it could potentially shake the market up. There are diesel-powered options available for the Jeep Grand Cherokee, the Volkswagen Touareg, and Mercedes even has the ML-350, which will likely be the Macan’s closest competitor. They will similarly priced, as well.
So, how long do consumers realistically need to wait to get a glimpse of the new Macan variant? It’s possible that the new Macan model could make an appearance at the 2015 L.A. Auto Show, but nothing is certain. Sales are set to commence in the U.S. in 2015 or 2016 at the latest.
