Ford (NYSE:F) has done pretty well in dominating the segment of Dakar rally worthy, road-legal trucks with its SVT Raptor, a hardcore, muscled-up version of the F-150 that comes from the factory. It packs 411 horsepower and 434 pound-feet of torque, 11.2 inches of front suspension travel (12.1 inches of rear travel), a 4.10 front axle with a TORSEN differential, and a 4.10 electronic-locking rear axle.
General Motors (NYSE:GM) didn’t have an answer to that one, and technically, it still doesn’t, so some independent aftermarket shops took it upon themselves to craft a truck worthy of competing with Ford’s 6.2-liter V8-powered monster. The Lingenfelter/Southern Comfort Automotive-made Chevy Reaper is the end result.
As you can see above, the front fascia has been completely redesigned, and new skid plates and bumpers have been added to ensure that the Reaper can take all the knocks the driver throws its way. The truck has — unsurprisingly — been lifted and sits on 33-inch tires that hug a set of 20-inch rims. The whole kit will reportedly be available through certain Chevrolet dealerships.
Upgraded suspension is provided courtesy of Fox Racing, and a Corsa exhaust replaces the stock setup to channel the fumes from an Edelbrock supercharged engine (if a customer so desires, the supercharger is an option).
Other options include some body graphics à la Raptor and some additional modifications such as light bars, step-bars, roof racks, bed covers, and 17-inch Beadlock Off Road Wheels.
Little else is known about the Reaper, including how much the conversion kit will cost, even before the $6,950 supercharger option is factored in. The Raptor costs about $44,000 new, so we would expect a competitive version of the Reaper to fall somewhere along those lines.
Overall, the Reaper appears to be a verifiable contender for those who have sworn off Ford for whatever reason. We are eagerly awaiting more information on the Reaper and, like the guys at Motor Authority, the inevitable head-to-head showdown with its foe at the Blue Oval.
