To coincide with its return to the World Rally Championship in 2017, Toyota will launch a high-performance version of its Yaris subcompact hatchback inspired by the recently revealed rally version (shown below).
Crucially, the launch of the hot Yaris might also see the introduction of the Gazoo name as Toyota’s global high-performance sub-brand, with Autocar reporting that the vehicle might be called a Yaris Gazoo.
Gazoo is the name of Toyota’s official motorsport division and recently it was reported that Toyota was looking at turning Gazoo into something along the lines of Ford Motor Company’s Ford Performance division or Nissan’s Nismo.
The only official information we have is a single teaser sketch but Toyota’s Yaris rally car provides some clues. We can expect the hot Yaris to come with a turbocharged 1.6-liter inline-4, the same type of engine used in the rally car.
Power should be well down on the rally car’s 375 horsepower, though. Something around 200 hp is more likely, making the hot Yaris the perfect rival for Ford’s Fiesta ST. Another potential rival is the Volkswagen Polo GTI.
No word yet on when the reveal will take place but Toyota says more details will be forthcoming early in the new year.
