Volkswagen Files Patents for Futuristic Sedan Concept
Patent drawings for a futuristic sedan have turned up in the European Union Intellectual Property Office’s database.
The drawings were found by Motor1, which reports that they were filed by Volkswagen and are likely for an upcoming concept.
Interestingly, the sedan is lacking a windscreen, which suggests it might be a showcase for self-driving technology. We know VW is working on self-driving technology and is aiming to have it on the market early next decade.
Access to the cabin is via a pair of massive gullwing doors, but what’s most intriguing is the rear section, which resembles the design used for the Bugatti Chiron. The large rear vents, blade-like taillights and central spine are all borrowed from the Bugatti hypercar. Bugatti is known to be working on proposals for a second model, one of which is a sedan, so perhaps the concept could be to gauge customer interest, similar to the Galibier 16C concept Bugatti unveiled in 2009.
