The Great Recession continues to find residency throughout America’s largest cities. Despite the recession technically ending more than six years ago, the recovery process is ongoing and clearly uneven across the nation.

A recent analysis from WalletHub examines the 150 largest cities in the United States to identify which have experienced the most and least improvement since the recession. The firm uses several key metrics, including unemployment rates, economic growth rates, consumer non-housing debt progress, home price appreciation, new business activity, inflow of college-educated workers, and poverty rates.

“…Since 2008, a total of 14 municipalities, including Detroit, have declared the rare Chapter 9 bankruptcy,” explains the report. “Left behind in recovery, these already struggling economies are bound to sustain the collateral effects of recession: an increase in crime rates, a decline in school quality and the collapse of local administrations, for instance. In the private sector, property values decline and businesses shut down. With minimal incentive to linger, skilled workers are forced to seek better opportunities in more thriving communities — completely crippling cities that had little hope remaining.”

Let’s take a look at the 10 major cities recovering the least from the Great Recession, using a combination of economic environment rank and employment opportunities.
