Most talk of vacation revolves around fun family getaways or romantic retreats for couples, but single guys also need to take some breaks. Going on a trip with some of your best buddies is a great way to relax and do something other than meet up for a few drinks at happy hour. Even men who are hitched should listen up, because vacationing with your friends is a great way to enjoy some of your favorite activities that your sweetheart might not enjoy quite as much.
Trying to coordinate a 2-week getaway probably isn’t practical. Even if you were somehow able to get all your schedules to align, that might be a little too much togetherness. Your best bet is a weekend trip. A few nights with your pals will give you just enough time to enjoy hanging out without driving each other nuts. Weekend escapes could also be the key to reducing your overall stress level. Psych Central said taking shorter trips throughout the year is a better strategy for boosting your mood than taking one, long vacation. This is because big trips tend to present more opportunity for stress to arise while away. We also get a significant spike in happiness from anticipating a getaway, so taking frequent trips means you’ll experience the boost more often.
Deciding to take a trip is the easy part, though. Figuring out where to go is a bit more tricky. Thankfully, we’ve done the hard work for you. These six locations are among the best for a weekend with the guys. Whether you’re looking to play a few rounds of golf or hit the beach, this list has a location you and your pals will love.
For some guys, a perfect day means watching a game of baseball and enjoying some beer. If you find yourself in this group, then Boston is the perfect place to head for a weekend. Enjoying a game at the legendary Fenway Park is a blast whether you’re a Red Sox fan or foe. The stadium is located near the heart of the city, so you can travel by foot if you opt for a nearby hotel, otherwise the subway is easy to navigate. In addition to sports, Condé Nast Traveler picked this city as a great spot for guys thanks to Hopster’s, a community craft brewery that will teach you and your buddies how to make beer. And yes, they have plenty of brews on tap for you to try.
Boston is also a great location for history buffs. Forbes suggested paying a visit to the Freedom Trail to check out tons of sites from the Revolutionary War. The food scene is also pretty great. Boston’s North End is a must for anyone who loves Italian dining while opportunities to dig into great seafood are nearly endless.
2. Yosemite, Calif.
You’ll be greeted by stunning views and endless opportunities to rock climb if you opt for a trip to Yosemite. Folks from all around the world come to these cliffs for some of the most challenging climbs out there, but you don’t have to be a pro to enjoy some climb time. AskMen said this destination is great for those who are just interested in some minor bouldering as well. Check out SuperTopo’s list of the best routes in the area. They include overall reviews as well as information on difficulty, so you won’t have trouble figuring out where to begin.
If some of your pals would rather leave the rock scaling to the pros, there are plenty of other things to do in the area. Sunset recommended checking out the towering sequoias, hiking the various trails, and taking a dip in some of the lakes. For information on hotels, look over U.S. News Travel’s extensive list.
3. Northern Maine
For all you adrenaline junkies, it doesn’t get much better than white water rafting. The Huffington Post said northern Maine is one of the best places to give it a shot on the Kennebec, Penobscot, and Dead rivers. No worries if it’s your first time, because there are plenty of guided tours in the area. Some services even offer overnight packages, which is perfect for guys traveling in groups. You’ll get to enjoy the thrill of the ride during the day, and relax by the campfire at night.
If camping is roughing it a little bit too much, there’s a resort complete with cabins, a restaurant, and a huge hot tub. Be sure to stop at the Kennebec River Brewery after a tough day of fighting the rapids. For more ideas on things to do, check out Discover Northern Maine.
4. Las Vegas
You don’t have to wake up with a raging hangover and no memory of the night before to have a great weekend in Las Vegas. Entertainment rules in this town, and there really is something for everyone. USA Today Travel recommended heading to Shoot Las Vegas to fire a few rounds using the weapons from your favorite movies, taking advantage of the high-end dining scene, and indulging in some adult entertainment. Thrillist rounded up their top choices for gentlemen’s clubs for nearly every interest.
If you’re going to make the trip to Vegas, you might as well include a little bit of gambling. No matter what game you prefer, just about any of the area’s resorts will have something for you. Sports buffs will want to get in on the action by placing a few bets on their favorite competition. Frommer’s recommended checking out the M Resort, the Venetian, and the Palazzo, because they allow you to wager during the game, as well as before.
Don’t forget about the array of shows or locations for high-end shopping either. With so many choices, it can be a little bit hard to choose. Check out Visit Las Vegas for a little more help planning your quick trip.
5. Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Bandon, Ore.
Golf courses pop up just about everywhere across the country, but Bandon Dunes is the best place for guys who are serious about their game. Golf Channel’s Matt Ginella chose this collection of courses as his top spot for a golf trip with the guys, calling it “a mecca for the avid amateur.” The location boasts four 18-hole courses, one 13-hole par-3 course, and a 100,000-square-foot putting coarse. It can also be a bargain, if you know what you’re doing. Golf Vacation Insider said the resort doesn’t advertise package deals, but there are some available for folks who ask. Also consider playing a few rounds in one day, because the fee for the second round is significantly cheaper than the first. If you have it in you to play more than two, every additional round is free.
As for lodging, picking one of the onsite options is the best choice. Golf Tripper said trying to save money by staying at a cheaper hotel farther away could end up backfiring, because you’re subject to limited tee-times and higher fees. You can check out rates on the resort’s website. Keep in mind, this destination is truly about the golf. Those looking for a booming nightlife might be a bit disappointed.
Guys looking to spend some time at the beach will want to head to Miami for a weekend getaway. Relaxing along the shore is nice, but CBS New York said it’s worth heading to Key West for some deep sea fishing and snorkeling. With tons of great bars and clubs, Miami is also a great choice for guys looking to let loose. USA Today’s 10Best chose its favorite places for a great night out.
Food lovers will appreciate the phenomenal dining scene in Miami. You’ll find food trucks, southern fare, and fine-dining venues all over the place. The only hard part is deciding where to start.
