8 Best Wine and Spirits to Enjoy in the Winter

Sure, the days of beachy vibes and Mai Tais might be behind us, but winter brings an assortment of fantastic holiday drinks. From wine to tequila, we’re pretty excited to get toasty (preferably by, you know, a fire) and clink glasses to the holiday season. And hey, you don’t win friends by showing up at their door for dinner with OJ or hosting a party with diet coke. Read on for the best in winter spirits this season for every kind of drinker.

1.  Patrón Silver Tequila

Source: Patron

Just announced in the end of November, this first ever 1-liter Patrón Silver tequila bottle is an alcohol-infused celebration of its hand-crafted process. The bottle, covered with an intricate design of their iconic bee, rendered in pure pewter and hand applied, is finished with a unique glass stopper to adorn the handsome, bespoke presentation. Inside this rare bottle, every drop of ultra-premium Patrón Silver tequila was handcrafted in small batches from the highest quality 100% Weber Blue Agave, and distilled and bottled by hand at the Hacienda Patrón in the highlands of Mexico. Collectible? Yes. Worth gifting? Sure. But if you’re anything like us, we kind of want to keep this beautiful collection bottle on our own bar.

2. The Famous and Black Grouse

Source: Black Grouse

The Famous Grouse is collaborating with mixologist’s favorite, Owl’s Brew, the first-ever tea crafted for cocktails (you just gotta try it, trust), to create two unique tea blends that will pair impeccably with the Famous Grouse, Scotland’s top-selling Scotch, and the Black Grouse, an award-winning blended Scotch whiskey (we can’t get enough of). Perfect to warm up with on a chilly winter eve, we love the intricacy in the flavor profiles and exotic, refreshing tasting notes in these bevvies. We’re pretty sure a little tea makes the booze plus mixer equation apropos pre-5 o’clock. Cheers!

3. Campari

Source: Campari

Legendary, indeed. Brace yourselves. For a guaranteed good, good time in your cozy winter wonderland, pick up a bottle of this one-of-a-kind red spirit, which in late November 2015, announced the U.S. launch of limited edition art labels, featuring a sketch by Futurist artist Fortunato Depero, reimagined with the use of contemporary colors.

The trio of limited edition labels reinterpret a sketch of a Campari pavilion designed by Depero in 1933 for an international exposition held in Milan (history buffs, you know you love it). Try a classic Negroni cocktail to make use of this wonderful elixir. The three collectible labels arrive just in time for the winter season and will grace retail stores across the United States beginning in November.

4. The Macallan Rare Cask

Yes, you might have to put down a pretty penny for this gem, but The Macallan Rare Cask is well worth the price tag for the serious boozehound. Crafted only from handpicked, Spanish oak sherry season cask, this exquisite ruby-red whiskey seamless melds beautiful sherry seasoned oak casks and vibrant natural color. The stunning sipper has incredible tasting notes of rich oak, vanilla, chocolate and more with a finish of light citrus zest. To up the ante, the Macallan Rare Cask is also introducing the first annual limited edition Rare Cask Bottle Stopper, designed exclusively by Felicia Ferrone. Richer, darker, and more chocolatey and hailing from the top 1% of barrels currently aging at the distillery? Don’t mind if we do.

Yes, just like the song. The fruit-forward “Drops of Jupiter” California Red Wine is a petite sirah-based red. At around $10, it tastes more like a $30 bottle (so if you’re gifting it, guests will never know it set you back only a Hamilton), and pairs wonderfully with food. Try it with a hearty, satisfying eggplant lasagna on a snowy, winter evening or riff off the wine’s hints of fruit with a stove-top stuffing.

Suggested retail: $9.99

6. Russell’s Reserve Single Barrel Rye

Source: Russell’s Reserve

Baby, it may be cold outside, but rye is hot right now. Bourbon Hall of Famers (yes, there is such a thing) Jimmy and Eddie Russell have been producing some of the most beloved and tasty Rye Whiskies in America for ages, actually. As the only father and son Master Distilling team in the business, their combined 94 years of experience is pretty impressive. This one-of-a-kind rye provides a delectable balance of spicy pepper, vanilla and tobacco, with each barrel having a slightly different taste (pretty cool, if you ask us). Try it in a classic cocktail like this lovely manly libation, The Old Fashioned.

Suggested retail: $59.95

7. Macchu Pisco La Diablada

If you’ve been hearing whisperings of this beverage lately, there’s good reason: This Peruvian drink is a wildly versatile brandy that works great in cocktails or enjoyed as a sipper on the rocks. Throwing a party? Try serving it in one of these festive Pisco punches.

8. Manhattan Moonshine

Source: Manhattan Moonshine

Fellas, we’re not talking the off the pick-up truck variety or the kind your brother-in-law from the boondocks always brings to family gatherings. This renowned un-aged whiskey recently received an impressive 89 rating from Whisky Advocate Magazine, making it the highest rated un-aged whiskey in the world. Inspired by the cocktail renaissance that occurred during American Prohibition and the glamorous yet oh-so-subversive nightlife that accompanied it, Manhattan Moonshine is the world’s first luxury un-aged Whiskey. The bottle also has a nice Gatsby-era feel to it, so if you’re gifting it, you won’t feel like you’re lugging just another bottle to your pal or fam. Try it in cocktails or do it as a celebratory shot post-skiing if you really want a jolt of warmth and goodness rushing through your blood.
