Kim Kardashian and 14 Other Celebrities Who Named Their Kids After Famous Places

When Kim Kardashian and Kanye West welcomed their third child, the fame-hungry pair chose a name that was anything but ordinary. In fact, their daughter’s name was inspired by a well-known windy city. Love it or hate it, the unusual baby-naming tradition has certainly caught on. And Kimye isn’t the only couple to name their child after a beloved location.

Here are 15 celebrities who’ve named their kids after famous places around the world.

1. Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale’s son, Zuma

No Doubt’s frontwoman is synonymous with cool girls and Southern California swagger. And the rocker chick paid homage to her SoCal roots when naming her second child in 2009.

Gwen Stefani and then-husband Gavin Rossdale drew inspiration from Zuma Beach, California. But they weren’t the ones who originally come up with the idea. During an interview with Detroit’s Mojo in the Morning, Stefani admitted she heard it from fellow No Doubt member Tom Dumont. Dumont and his wife were also expecting, and Zuma was on their list of potential baby names.

When Chris Hemsworth and his wife, Elsa Pataky, welcomed their baby girl into the world in 2012, they paid tribute to one of their favorite countries by naming her India. Aside from their love of the country, the new parents wanted to ensure their daughter had a strong, unforgettable name.

“Coming from a family of three boys, my mother was very much a feminist,” Hemsworth told USA Today. “When we would call each other ‘girls,’ she would say, ‘What is wrong with a girl?’ Girls can be strong and you have to respect that.”

The Kardashian clan has a band of soon-to-be selfie-loving offspring, many of whom have pretty unusual names. Following big sister North and big brother Saint, baby girl Chicago made her debut into the world’s most famous family in January 2018.

While Kanye’s love for his hometown has been well-documented, now he’ll never have to worry about forgetting the name of his kid ever again.

Furthermore, Chicago isn’t the only Kardashian kid who shares a name with a place on a map. In fact, Kourtney Kardashian named her daughter Penelope Scotland. So, was the name inspired by Kourtney’s ex and Penelope’s father, Scott Disick? Probably not. Kourtney’s mother, Kris Jenner, is of Scottish descent, so it’s likely a nod to the matriarch’s heritage.

No, Jimmy Fallon’s daughter isn’t named after Winnie the Pooh. The story is actually much sweeter than that.

There’s one lake town that holds a special place in Fallon’s heart, and that’s Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire. Not only does the late-night show host love to vacation there, but it’s where he proposed to his wife, Nancy.

Obviously, the full Winnipesaukee is a bit long, so they shortened it to Winnie.

While not all celebrities on this list have revealed the exact reasoning behind their destination-inspired naming process, Alicia Keys has explained that Egypt was the exact inspiration for her baby girl’s name. Keys, who had once taken a solo trip to Egypt that undoubtedly challenged her, admitted the experience was a life-changing one.

When she found out she was pregnant, husband Swizz Beatz likened her powerful time in Egypt to what she’d soon experience as a mother. And thus, Egypt was born — figuratively and literally.

Hollywood veterans Ron and Cheryl Howard had their daughter Bryce Dallas Howard in 1981. And their inspiration behind her middle name? Well, it was somewhat of a family tradition.

Apparently, the pair named each of their children after the place in which they were conceived. How’s that for a tightly knit family bond?

If you think Mariah Carey named her child after a cultural mecca, think again. When she and Nick Cannon had twin boys in 2011, the world’s biggest diva thought it’d be appropriate to name one of them after something very, very special: the top tier of her New York City apartment. It’s called the Moroccan Room thanks to its Moroccan-inspired decor.

It’s no surprise that Michael Jackson — perhaps the greatest entertainer of all time — strayed from the norm when naming his daughter. After all, the guy had more creativity in his pinkie finger than most have in their whole body. But that’s neither here nor there because he ended up choosing a name that was already taken. (Find out by whom, next.)

According to Debbie Rowe’s account, her daughter with Michael Jackson was named after the city in which she was conceived.

Leave it to one of the world’s most beautiful couples to don their gorgeous kids with names that are anything but status quo. When the Beckhams welcomed their first child together in 1999, they didn’t land on a name from their home country of England. Rather, the famous duo dubbed their son with the name of a New York City borough.

The fashionista admitted she had liked the name Brooke for a girl. So, when they had their son, they turned it into the gender-neutral Brooklyn, which was also the location where Victoria found out she as pregnant. But she said in her autobiography that was just a coincidence.

Nick and Vanessa Lachey have three children whose names are cities — Camden, Brooklyn, and Phoenix. While their son Camden is certainly not named after the city in New Jersey, we’re not sure about Phoenix’s name.

What the Lacheys have confirmed, however, is the story behind Brooklyn’s name. Baby girl Lachey was conceived in New York. So, there you go.

Nick Lachey’s ex-sister-in-law was also inspired by a well-known locale in the Big Apple. In 2008, Ashlee Simpson and then-husband Pete Wentz named their baby boy Bronx. However, neither Simpson nor Wentz has said publicly what the story behind the name is. In fact, it seems Wentz likes the fact that it’s a bit of a mystery, so we probably won’t find out the origin of the name anytime soon.
