Could Oprah Winfrey Dethrone President Donald Trump in 2020?
Oprah Winfrey recently gave a powerful speech at the Golden Globes accepting a lifetime achievement award. And the 10-minute speech left everyone wondering whether she’ll run for president in 2020. See how likely it is for Oprah to “own” the 2020 presidential election, ahead.
Oprah knows people
This is the understatement of the century. Oprah knows everyone in the entertainment industry. At first glance, this may not seem like a helpful tool for winning a presidential election, but her connections are extremely valuable. She’ll have famous faces campaigning for her and promoting her campaign platform on a global scale.
She has the funds
Oprah is loaded. After decades of being a success, she’s amassed quite a fortune. For example, she once deposited a check at the bank for millions simply because she hadn’t been to the bank in a while, Oprah told Ellen DeGeneres while shooting a segment for Ellen’s talk show. Similar to Donald Trump, Oprah has the capital to finance her own presidential campaign without donors.
Oprah has a global fan base
Oprah has fans worldwide. And her likeability would no doubt be an asset to her come election time. If you saw Oprah on a presidential ballot, you’d probably consider ticking her box.
She’s not the only celebrity who may run in 2020
Since Trump has become commander in chief, many celebrities are now considering running for president. Without any prior political or military experience, celebrities may now have a shot since Trump broke the barrier in 2016. Other celebrities besides Oprah who may run include Kanye West, Dwayne Johnson, and Mark Zuckerberg.
Oprah has experience with campaign issues
She’s dealt firsthand with campaign issues throughout her career. Education, women’s rights, drugs, and health care are all topics she’s discussed at some point in her career, whether on her show or through personal endeavors. Take, for instance, the school she established with help from Nelson Mandela. 2017 marked the academy’s first graduating class of students.
She really did consider running
In an interview with 60 Minutes, Oprah said all the speculation that she would run had her really considering the idea. But so far, she still has no intention of beginning a campaign. “I’d feel that I have a responsibility as a person who has a big voice in this country to use it to promote justice and kindness and good will in the world,” she said. “It never has felt to me that that I was supposed to be political, and it still does not feel that to me.”
Trump’s confident he can beat Oprah in 2020
“Yeah, I’ll beat Oprah,” Trump told reporters during a meeting, NBC News reports. “Oprah would be a lot of fun,” he added. While Trump says he’d beat Oprah in 2020, he has considered her career in politics before. In 1999 and 2015, Trump considered her as a possible choice for vice president if he were to run for office.
