It’s a homeowner’s worst nightmare. You’re relaxing at home after a long day of work, when you suddenly hear noise outside your door. Before you can get up to see what it is, a group of thieves barge in, determined to take all your valuables. Any property can become the target of a burglary. It doesn’t matter if you live in a house or an apartment, or if you’re a store owner. All a burglar is thinking about is how to score valuables at your expense. It’s important to protect your property no matter where it’s located. However, some cities are more likely to put you at risk than others.

One quick tip: if you have valuable electronics at home, make sure they’re out of view or locked down before leaving for the day. Burglaries involving the theft of an electronic or household appliance rose from 28% in 2001 to 34% in 2011, according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics.

Here are 10 cities that have some of the highest numbers of reported burglaries, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Uniform Crime Report. The FBI lists reported crimes by city and state for areas with a population of 100,000 or more from January 2014 to June 2015.
