Manly Libation of the Week: Hot Buttered Rum

Baby, it’s cold outside, indeed. Why not warm up with one of these refined, cozy cocktails that will send a jolt of energy and goodness through your chilly veins? With a vibrant cultural history and plenty of folklore surrounding the classic drink, we were curious to dive into the nitty gritty of this legendary libation.
The history of hot buttered rum
“The hot buttered rum emerged alongside the rum and molasses trade in the United States back in colonial times,” shares Karen Hoskin, co-founder and president of Montanya Distillers. “There are many theories, but some people believed drinking melted butter would keep a sailor warm through the long cold nights. So, of course, adding rum made the melted butter go down much more easily. Others believed butter settled and balanced the cloying sweetness of molasses in the original recipe of the drink.”
“Our recipe at Montanya Distillers goes back to the original Colorado Cache cookbook, a recipe which Montanya Distillers co-founder Brice Hoskin’s family has used for more than three generations,” adds Hoskin. “This recipe may be made in bulk and kept frozen all winter to allow for an easy, spontaneous cocktail, a thermos for an outing, or a group batch for a winter party.” Read on for some warming, booze-spiked goodness…
“HotTanya” Buttered Rum Batter
“Our version of the Hot Buttered Rum is called the Hottanya because it always features Montanya Oro Rum,” says Hoskin.
- 1 quart best quality vanilla ice cream, softened
- 1 pound salted butter
- 1 pound brown sugar
- 1 pound confectioners sugar
Directions: Mix in durable blender or Vitaminmix until fully mixed. Store batter up to 4 months in freezer.
The Hottanya Cocktail
- 2 spoonfuls of Hottanya Mix (depends on serving size and richness desired)
- 2 ounces Montanya Oro Rum
- 2 ounces hot water
Directions: Place in microwave for about 30 seconds until piping hot, or warm on stovetop. Stir, and top with whipped cream. Sprinkle with nutmeg and serve in a coffee mug. (A few helpful hints: If not piping hot, the butter can solidify over time. If too hot and simmering for too long, the rum can evaporate.)
Tom and Jerry
“A traditional Christmastime cocktail developed by a British Journalist named Pierce Egan, but popularized in the U.S. midwest. While it is a hot buttered rum cocktail, it spins the origins of the cocktail by adding whipped egg whites and cognac,” says Hoskin.
- 6 eggs, separated
- ½ teaspoon cream of tartar
- 1 pound sugar
- 1 ounce dark Jamaican-style rum
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
Directions: In a nonreactive bowl, whip the egg whites with the cream of tartar until they form stiff peaks. In a separate bowl, beat the yolks with the sugar, rum, and vanilla (if using). When the mixture is completely liquid, fold it into the whites gently.
- 1 tablespoon Tom and Jerry Batter (see above)
- 1 ounce Cognac
- 1 ounce Montanya Oro Rum
- Whole milk, hot
Directions: Stir and serve. Cheers!
