The history of the Daiquiri

“The Daiquiri is a classic cocktail that was created in Cuba during the late 1800s, consisting of Rum, lime juice, and sugar,” shares Willy Shine, Beverage Consultant and Brand Ambassador for Appleton Estate Jamaica Rum. “Ernest Hemingway loved the cocktail and was said to drink 6-12 of them in one sitting. Although his namesake Daiquiri used maraschino and grapefruit juices, and was called the Hemingway Daiquiri or ‘The Papa Doble,’ Hemingway said these drinks ‘had no taste of alcohol and felt, as you drank them, the way downhill glacier skiing feels running through powder snow.’

John F. Kennedy Jr. also loved Daiquiris. When he sailed, he would have what he called ‘Daiquiri Time Outs,’ or the ‘DTO.’ Today, Massachusetts has resurrected the DTO as an industry shot or handshake, which is sweeping the nation,” explains Shine. We think we can get behind this whole DTO thing.
