Sipping a well-made cocktail is the perfect way to unwind and relax, whether you’ve had a long day at the office or just want to kick back with some friends. Follow our Manly Libations series, as we highlight manly cocktails, their histories, and a few bonus recipes — we guarantee these classic drinks will put some hair on your chest.

The History of The Godfather

This simple cocktail, often a combination of whiskey and amaretto, does the infamous movie it’s named after justice. Disaronno explains that the beverage originated in the U.S. in the 70s and was the cocktail of choice for Marlon Brando, who played Don Vito Corleone in the original Godfather film, released in 1972. In addition, The Great Mate notes that since the Italian mob played such a major role in the film, it’s possible that the drink got its name from the Italian liqueur, amaretto, that’s added to it.

The Famous Grouse compares it to an “even more enjoyable Scotch on the rocks,” adding that the drink’s preparation is just as simple as its ingredient list. Just combine the whiskey and amaretto over ice cubes, making sure to serve it in an old-fashioned glass, and then sip and enjoy. The end result is a cocktail that is smooth, subtly sour, and not overly sweet.

If you find you really enjoy this drink, there are several variations we recommend adding to your cocktail repertoire. You can experiment with the amount of amaretto you use, adding either one or two parts, and bourbon can be used in place of Scotch. The Great Mate says you can also switch things up with The Godmother, a cocktail that uses vodka in place of whiskey. While you’re at it, you might as well give The Godchild a shot, a version of the drink that uses cream instead of scotch.
