These Are the 100 Most Popular Halloween Costumes of 2017, According to Google
Google Trends has released a list of the most popular Halloween costumes of 2017 based on what people are searching for, and some of them are a bit surprising.
This list comes courtesy of Google’s Frightgeist, which is tracking the most searched for costumes around the United States. It’s worth noting that the list is still subject to change, but seeing as most Halloween parties are happening over the weekend, the majority of people who are going to dress up have probably already started planning their costume.
It’s also worth noting that some of the costumes are for specific characters whereas others are more generic. Also, some of them are just for properties like Star Wars, which would reflect Google searches for “Star Wars costumes” rather than something specific like “Kylo Ren costumes.”
Here’s the list of the 100 costumes people are searching for the most on Google this year:

The most popular fictional characters to dress as this year are Wonder Woman, Harley Quinn, Moana, and Pennywise. Wonder Woman is not particularly surprising to see at the top of the list, as her film was the number one highest-grossing movie of the summer and the second highest-grossing film of the year. It also arguably made the biggest impact on pop culture of any movie released in 2017, inspiring young girls around the world. Harley Quinn was the most popular costume of 2016 after the release of Suicide Squad, and she remains nearly as popular this year despite not being in any new movie, only slipping down to the number two spot. Moana being high up on the list also makes sense considering this is the first Halloween since the release of the popular Disney film, which hit theatres in November 2016.
Pennywise, of course, was expected to be on the list, as he’s the villain of the most popular horror film of 2017 and one of the most horror films of all time. It might be a little surprising to see him all the way down at 16, but keep in mind It is an R-rated horror film, and so this is a costume that will only likely be worn by adults; all of the costumes further up can be worn by kids or adults. Speaking of horror characters, it’s unexpected that Chucky is so high up on the list; although he did just have a new sequel come out this month, Cult of Chucky, it went straight to video and wasn’t exactly the sensation that It was.
Belle makes her way onto the list as well, coming in at number 21. This was always a popular Halloween costume for girls, but it’s especially so this year after the release of the live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast. Interestingly, though, Moana is the more popular Disney princess on the list, despite the fact that Beauty and the Beast was released more recently. This is probably just because Belle is a character that has been around for years and there’s no real difference between a 1991 Belle costume and a 2017 Belle costume. Moana, on the other hand, is a brand new character who was dreamed up for the 2016 film of the same name, and she has become wildly popular among Disney fans.

A few Star Wars characters made the list, as did just the phrase “Star Wars.” Interestingly, it’s the older characters who seem to be more popular than the newer ones just based on these searches; Darth Vader and Princess Leia both made the top 100, but Rey and Kylo Ren did not. Rey is number 186, and Kylo Ren is number 562.
There are also a few characters on here that seem to always show up around Halloween regardless of whether they’re particularly relevant that year, including The Joker, Batman, Little Red Riding Hood, and Mickey Mouse. And, of course, there are plenty of generic costumes that are not connected to any particular property, and in fact, eight out of the top 10 most popular costumes are not based on a specific character.
The list above reflects the most popular Halloween costumes nationally, but Google also allows users to see what costumes are most popular in their area and what costumes are most popular in particular cities across the country. You can play around with that feature by heading over to Frightgeist.
