A Royal Photographer Reveals His Favorite Photos of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry
Ever since September 2017, nobody has been able to keep their eyes off Meghan Markle and Prince Harry. That includes the photographers tasked with capturing images of the royal family. Throughout their whirlwind romance — and even at the royal wedding — Getty Images photographer Chris Jackson has taken some of the most iconic photos of the young couple.
Below, Jackson reveals his favorite photos of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry.
1. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle attend the Invictus Games
- Sept. 25, 2017
The first photo on Jackson’s list is this shot of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry at the Invictus Games on September 25, 2017. The couple attended a wheelchair tennis match during the 2017 games in Toronto. And it looked like they had a lot of fun courtside. Jackson explains that he has photographed the Invictus Games from the beginning.
He explains that the inspiration for the event, created by Prince Harry himself, came from the royal’s visit to the Warrior Games in Colorado. Jackson adds, “There really was no better place than the Invictus Games in Toronto in 2017 for Prince Harry to introduce his girlfriend to the world. They walked out together hand-in-hand to watch the wheelchair tennis, and it was lovely to see such a relaxed interaction between them.”

2. The couple announces their engagement
- Nov. 27, 2017
Next on Jackson’s list of his favorite photos of the couple comes this shot, taken during an official photocall to announce their engagement at the Sunken Gardens at Kensington Palace. They announced their engagement on November 27, 2017. They’d officially been a couple since November 2016, and they would tie the knot on May 19, 2018. Jackson recalls of this moment, “It was a pretty drab and chilly Monday morning when Kensington Palace announced the engagement — but suddenly, things brightened up. The nation had a royal wedding to look forward to!”
Jackson notes that the couple made a meaningful choice of venue for the photocall. “Poignantly, they held the engagement photo-call in Kensington Palace Gardens, somewhere that meant so much to Princess Diana. It was lovely to capture these first moments of a very happy couple in such a special place.”

3. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle attend their first public engagement together
- Dec. 1, 2017
Jackson also puts this shot of the royal couple attending the Terrance Higgins Trust World AIDS Day charity fair at Nottingham Contemporary on the list of his favorite photos. On December 1, 2017, just days after announcing their engagement, the two shared an engagement of a different kind: their first public appearance since she said “yes.”
Jackson recounts the day, “This visit to the Terrence Higgins Trust charity fair in Nottingham was their first public engagement together. Prince Harry has visited a huge amount in the past, and I’m sure he saw this as an opportunity for Meghan to see some of the great work that has been done with young people there.”

4. Meghan Markle waves to a fan
- Dec. 1, 2017
Jackson took some great images both of the couple and of Meghan Markle on her own when she and Prince Harry attended their first public engagement together. The royals often have large crowds of people to greet and to wave to when they appear at public functions. But this shot has a great story behind it.
According to Jackson, “In Nottingham, large crowds lined the narrow streets. I loved this moment as a lady from Toronto shouted out to Meghan, who waved back at her.”

5. The royal family attends a Christmas service
- Dec. 25, 2017
Fans of the royal family love seeing the royals all in one place at one time. So people on both sides of the pond loved the photos that Jackson shot when the whole family attended a Christmas Day church service at Church of St. Mary Magdalene on December 25, 2017, in King’s Lynn, England.
Jackson reports that he captured this shot as the group departed the service. “Christmas at Sandringham is an important time for the royal family, and as they made their annual walk up to Sandringham Church on Christmas Day morning, it was lovely to see Prince Harry joined by his fiancée. I caught this moment of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince Harry, and Meghan Markle bowing and curtsying to the Queen as she left the service.”

6. Meghan Markle and Prince Harry attend one of their first engagements of 2018
- Jan. 9, 2018
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry started a busy year the royal way: with an official engagement. This January 9 photo shows Meghan Markle visiting Reprezent Radio in London, England. As Getty explains, “The Reprezent training programme was established in Peckham in 2008, in response to the alarming rise in knife crime, to help young people develop and socialize through radio.”
Jackson recalls this specific moment (and the expression on Meghan’s face), “A crowd had gathered to catch a glimpse of the famous couple, and as they shouted across to the royals on arrival, Meghan gave a tentative wave back. One of the DJs at this event offered up his business card and services to DJ at the wedding. I wonder if he got the gig.”

7. The couple greets schoolchildren
- Jan. 18, 2018
Next on Jackson’s list of his favorite photos of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle? This shot of the couple on a visit to Cardiff Castle in Wales. The image shows the newly-engaged couple greeting a group of schoolchildren — even though, as Jackson reports, train delays held up the royals and caused them arrive an hour later than expected.
“A large group of schoolchildren who had gathered to meet them sang songs as they tried to stay warm,” the photographer remembers. “When Prince Harry and Meghan arrived, over an hour late, they took the time to meet as many people as possible. At one point, Meghan even wrote a note for a very lucky 10-year-old, Caitlin Clarke from Marlborough Primary School. That’s something she can treasure for a long time to come.”

8. Meghan Markle waves to fans
- Feb. 13, 2018
Meghan Markle was likely pretty familiar with greeting crowds of fans thanks to her starring role on Suits. But even that might not have prepared her for the constant crowds she’d encounter when attending royal engagements with Prince Harry and other members of the royal family. In the photo above, the couple had just arrived at Edinburgh Castle in Scotland.
Jackson comments on this shot, “Outside Edinburgh Castle, with Meghan in her tartan coat, the crowds were over three deep at some points.”

9. The young royals share a laugh
- Feb. 28, 2018
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle often only have each other when they make official appearances. But at the first annual Royal Foundation Forum on February 28, they were joined by Prince William and Kate Middleton, too. As Jackson explains of the foundation, “With a background in charity work, Meghan Markle is a great fit to become the fourth patron of the Royal Foundation of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry. The foundation is an umbrella organization that supports the charitable interests of the royals.”
The photographer adds, “It was at the annual Royal Foundation Forum in London that I photographed the two couples together as they took to the stage to talk about their plans, and they all burst out laughing after a light-hearted question from the interviewer. I got the sense from the event that Meghan is going to be a huge asset to the organization and will bring a wealth of experience from her own previous charitable endeavors.”

10. The couple say hello to crowds in Northern Ireland
- March 23, 2018
Next on Jackson’s list of his favorite photos of the couple? This image, where Meghan Markle and Prince Harry greet fans on a March 23 visit to Belfast’s Catalyst Inc., which Getty characterizes as “Northern Ireland’s next-generation science park.” As Jackson reports, crowds of people managed to greet the royals even though their appearance remained something of a secret.
“Kept secret until the last minute, the visit to Northern Ireland was another stop on Prince Harry and Meghan’s tour ahead of their wedding,” Jackson explains. “Despite the secrecy, crowds still gathered in the city center in droves. Cheers went out as the couple emerged from one of the oldest pubs in Belfast, the Crown Liquor Salon.”

11. Meghan Markle meets young entrepreneurs
- March 23, 2018
Jackson chose another image from the same day and royal engagement to add to the list of his favorite photos of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry. The couple visited Catalyst Inc. to meet young entrepreneurs and innovators. And in this image, Markle takes it all in inside the science center.
As Jackson remembers the moment, “I photographed the couple visiting a technology innovation center, and the soft light streaming through the window was an ideal opportunity for some nice portraits.”

12. The couple attends a Women’s Empowerment reception
- April 19, 2018
Just a month before their wedding, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry appeared in this memorable photo. The couple attended a Women’s Empowerment reception hosted by Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting at the Royal Aeronautical Society.
Jackson reports that the couple had an “incredibly busy week” during the CHOGM. “Meghan and Harry were involved in a number of different areas.” He adds, “I photographed them at a reception promoting women’s empowerment, and I loved this little moment between them, with the Lichtenstein-esque branding ‘Leave No Girl Behind’ in the background.”
