Inside Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Favorite Vacation Spot
When you’re a prince and a famous actress, spending time together can be hard, especially out of the spotlight. That is why it was so important for Prince Harry to take Meghan Markle to one of his favorite getaways in the early months of their relationship. Now, the royal couple share a unique bond to the vacation spot — it’s where they fell in love! — and consider it a home away from home.
Ahead, we take a look at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s favorite place to vacation, including where they stay and what they do while visiting.
1. Their favorite vacation spot
Weekend plans? With tempartures of about 34° (94°F) why not cool off with a view, over the Boteti River…. G&T's are an optional extra #menoakwena #travelbotswana #botswana #safari #botetiriver #makgadikgadi #sundowner #drinks #ginandtonic #friyay #safari #travel #advenutre #beattheheat #swimming #swimfun #poolwithaview
When Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced their engagement, they drew attention to their favorite vacation spot (and origin of the center diamond in Meghan’s engagement ring): Botswana. Located in the southern part of Africa, the landlocked country is one of the royal couple’s favorite places to spend some time alone together.
2. Where they stay
#Botswanas best kept secret is now part of our family! @meno_a_kwena, set high on a cliff overlooking the #botetiriver offering uninterrupted views from all 9 tents is the perfect base from which explore the #makgadikgadipansnationalpark. Want to know what it’s like to camp as a royal? Well, for starters, they don’t rough it. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle enjoy a luxury camp site (aka glamping) called Meno a Kwena in Maun. The camp feature nine luxury tents with en suite bathrooms for ultimate privacy.
3. Their tent overlooks a river where wild elephants roam
Sand baths and swimming fun! We can think of no better way (or place) to celebrate #worldelephantday than the banks of the #botetiriver #menoakwena #worldelephantday2017 #wildlife #safari #safariadventure #botswana #travelbotswana #southernafrica #dontletthemdisappear #saveourelephants #wildlifeconservation #saynotoivory
In addition to staying in a luxury tent, the couple’s camp site overlooks Boteti River — a waterhole for African elephants. But that’s not all. If they’re vacationing between May and November (the dry season), they get to witness one of Africa’s largest zebra migrations, too.
4. They enjoy the privacy
Between the paparazzi and the royal family’s strict rules, running off to Botswana is like privacy paradise for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. That is probably why Harry invited Meghan on a trip to the country just four weeks into their relationship.
5. They spend their nights under the stars
In the words of #paulokenfold "oh my starry eyed surprise" bookings are open & when you stay three nights or more between June – September you can enjoy a night under the stars in the Makgadikgadi Pans #outdoorlife #safari #safariadventure #stars #nightphotography #undertheafricansky #botswana #travel #travelbotswana #botswanatourism #fortheloveoftravel #naturalselectiontravel
Talk about romantic. During their royal engagement interview, Prince Harry noted how after he persuaded Meghan Markle to join him in Botswana, the couple camped out under the stars. It’s no wonder this is where the royal couple fell in love.
6. They celebrated Meghan Markle’s birthday there
As far as we know, the couple have enjoyed Botswana a couple of times in their relationship. That includes a trip to celebrate Meghan Markle’s 36th birthday.
7. They consider it a second home …
… Or at least Prince Harry does. He’s been visiting Botswana for 20 years. And in January 2017, he was appointed a patron of Rhino Conservation Botswana.
