Sex Crimes: Here Are 15 States With the Most Registered Sex Offenders

If you have children and you’re thinking of moving to a new state, one cause for concern is safety. Unfortunately, one very real threat in our society is sexual offenders. If you’re concerned about the safety of your state or you want to do some research on a state, you might want to review the state’s sex offender registry.

In addition to contacting the local police precinct for information, here are 15 states that have the highest rates of registered sex offenders per 100,000 people, according to research from the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. How safe is your state?

15. Minnesota

  • Number of sex offenders per 100,000 people: 319
  • Total number in this state: 17,589

Minnesota comes out as the state with the least number of sex offenders on our list. This state has 319 registered sex offenders per 100,000 people. When analyzing the sex crimes for major cities in Minnesota, Minneapolis had the highest number of reported rapes per capita (210), according to the FBI’s semiannual Uniform Crime Report. Minneapolis has a very high violent crime rate of 83.9, according to Sperling’s Best Places. This is much higher than the violent crime rate of 31.1 for the entire United States.   • Total number in this state: 3,284

Next up is Alaska, which is no surprise, considering it is the most dangerous state in the U.S., according to crime statistics provided by the FBI and WalletHub. Alaska has 321 registered sex offenders per 100,000 people. When analyzing sex crimes for major cities in Alaska, Anchorage had 302 reported rapes per capita, according to the FBI’s semiannual Uniform Crime Report.   • Total number in this state: 90,616

Texas is known for its Southern charm, but when it comes to sex offenses, that’s when things aren’t so charming. The Lone Star State has 325 registered sex offenders per 100,000 people. When analyzing sex crimes for major cities in Texas, Houston had 600 reported rapes per capita, according to the FBI’s semiannual Uniform Crime Report. Houston has a violent crime rate of 87.8, which is much higher than the violent crime rate of 31.1 for the entire United States. Texas has a list of its 10 most wanted sex offenders here.

12. Mississippi

  • Total number in this state: 9,830

Mississippi has 329 registered sex offenders per 100,000 people. It’s also No. 14 on our list of the most dangerous states in America. When analyzing sex crimes for major cities in Mississippi, Jackson had 42 reported rapes per capita, according to the FBI’s semiannual Uniform Crime Report. Jackson, Mississippi, has a violent crime rate of 81.1, which is much higher than the violent crime rate of 31.1 for the entire United States. 11. Colorado

  • Total number in this state: 18,451

Colorado has 333 registered sex offenders per 100,000 people. When analyzing sex crimes for major cities in Colorado, Colorado Springs and Denver tied, with 255 reported rapes per capita, according to the FBI’s semiannual Uniform Crime Report. The Colorado Springs metro area has a violent crime rate of 36.6 (on a scale of 1 to 100) according to research by Sperling’s Best Places. 10. Florida

  • Total number in this state:  69,917

Florida has 339 registered sex offenders per 100,000 people. It’s also No. 15 on our list of the most dangerous states in America. When analyzing sex crimes for major cities in Florida, Jacksonville had 251 reported rapes per capita, according to the FBI’s semiannual Uniform Crime Report. This city has an overall violent crime rate of 55.1. Unfortunately, South Florida is known for housing sex offenders in what The New York Times once referred to as a “sex offender village.” A few years later, GQ also covered this village in an article titled “Welcome to Pariahville.”

9. Tennessee

Tennessee has 344 registered sex offenders per 100,000 people. It’s also No. 6 on our list of the most dangerous states in America. When analyzing sex crimes for major cities in Tennessee, Memphis reported 229 rapes per capita, according to the FBI’s semiannual Uniform Crime Report. Memphis has one of the highest violent crime rates, with a troubling score of 93.4 (on a scale of 1 to 100). When analyzing sex crimes for major cities in Kansas, Overland Park reported 69 rapes per capita, according to the FBI’s semiannual Uniform Crime Report. The Kansas City metro area has a violent crime rate of 41.8 (on a scale of 1 to 100) according to research by Sperling’s Best Places. Wyoming has 380 registered sex offenders per 100,000 people. The state has a violent crime rate of 21.3, according to research conducted by Sperling’s Best Places. South Dakota has 412 registered sex offenders per 100,000 people. It’s also No. 10 on our list of the most dangerous states in America. When analyzing sex crimes for major cities in South Dakota, Sioux Falls reported 70 rapes per capita, according to the FBI’s semiannual Uniform Crime Report. When analyzing sex crimes for major cities in Michigan, Detroit reported 267 rapes per capita, according to the FBI’s semiannual Uniform Crime Report. When analyzing the most dangerous cities in this state, Wilmington comes out on top, with a violent crime rate (on a scale of 1 to 100) of 93.7 and a property crime rate of 66.1, according to research by Sperling’s Best Places. When analyzing sex crimes for major cities in Arkansas, Little Rock reported 79 rapes per capita, according to the FBI’s semiannual Uniform Crime Report. Little Rock has a violent crime rate of 92.1, which far surpasses the United States’ overall violent crime score of 31.1. Oregon takes the No. 1 spot, with 676 registered sex offenders per 100,000 people. It’s also No. 12 on our list of the most dangerous states in America. When analyzing sex crimes for major cities in Oregon, Eugene reported 42 rapes per capita, according to the FBI’s semiannual Uniform Crime Report. The Eugene metro area has a violent crime rate of 54.5, which is slightly higher than the United States’ overall violent crime score of 31.1.
