The Real Reason Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Are Moving Next Door to Prince William and Kate Middleton
News just broke that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle plan to move in next door to Prince William and Kate Middleton. The couple will make the move to Apartment 1 at Kensington Palace shortly after their May 19 wedding, as soon as renovations finish. But why does Harry want to move in right next to his brother, who lives in Apartment 1A with his wife and children?
It turns out that there are more than a few reasons for the couple to make the move. Read on to discover all the reasons why Prince Harry and Meghan Markle want to live next to Prince William and Kate Middleton — including the most exciting reason on page 9.
9. Many other royals live at Kensington Palace
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle already live at Kensington Palace. And it makes sense for them to stay at the royal residence because of all the other royals who live there. Prince William and Kate Middleton also live there, of course. But as The Daily Beast reports, the young generation of royals “have made a concerted attempt to turn Kensington Palace into a power base.”
In addition to Prince William and Prince Harry, Princess Eugenie and her fiancé also live at Kensington Palace (in Ivy Cottage). Plus, as Business Insider reports, six senior royals of Queen Elizabeth II’s generation have rooms at Kensington Palace.

8. They’re upgrading from their current apartment
If they had the chance, many newlyweds would like to upgrade from to a bigger apartment or house after their marriage. And it looks like that’s exactly what Harry and Meghan thought. As House Beautiful reports, the couple currently lives in Kensington Palace’s Nottingham Cottage, a charming but modest residence that has two bedrooms.
Kensington Palace’s Apartment 1, on the other hand, isn’t really an apartment at all. It has 21 rooms, according to House Beautiful — a major upgrade from their current home, where Harry has actually lived for four years. Business Insider reports that Apartment 1 and Apartment 1A “used to be one enormous set of rooms until they were divided in the 1950s.”

7. Moving somewhere else would cost taxpayers more money
House Beautiful notes that if Harry and Meghan wanted to move somewhere off the Kensington Palace grounds following their wedding, the switch would likely end up costing taxpayers more money. As it’s situated within Kensington Palace, Nottingham Cottage is “very safe.”
But if the couple moved to a home somewhere else in London, the cost of security would increase. That means that British taxpayers would have to pay more money to keep Harry and Meghan safe — and nobody likes shouldering those costs.

6. Harry is following in William’s footsteps
The royal family is all about tradition. And as The Daily Beast reports, Prince Harry seems to be following in the footsteps of his older brother, Prince William, in choosing to move into one of the wings of Kensington Palace after his wedding.
William lived at Nottingham Cottage for several years before he married Kate Middleton. William and Kate also lived at the cottage for a few months after their marriage. Then, once builders put the finishing touches on renovations to Apartment 1A, William and Kate moved into their wing of the palace.

5. Harry will be able to pull pranks on William
Prince Harry has pulled more than a few pranks on his brother. So there’s one feature of Apartment 1 that seems too perfect for Harry to resist: an interconnecting door to Apartment 1A, where William and Kate live with their family. We imagine that sharing a wall — and a door — will give the brothers plenty of opportunities to pull pranks on one another.
But living within such close proximity will have another benefit, too.
Next: They’ll enjoy another benefit thanks to that door.
4. They can spend time with family without getting photographed by the press
House Beautiful reports that when Harry and Meghan move in next to William, Kate, George, Charlotte, and Louis, they’ll all be able to spend time together without getting noticed by the press. As The Daily Beast notes, reports indicate that the palace has planted a line of fir trees to obscure the view of the garden belonging to Apartment 1 from the street.
Plus, as House Beautiful notes, when Harry and Meghan live next door to William and Kate, they will be able to “pop in and see them at any time without being photographed by the press.”
Next: If the newlyweds need to get away, they can.
3. But Harry and Meghan will also be able to get away
If living right next door to your brother sounds a little too close for comfort, remember this: The royals will have plenty of opportunities to escape one another’s company. They have royal engagements to attend and official trips to take. And, of course, there are plenty of country homes to visit.
The Daily Beast reports that Harry and Meghan are reportedly in line for a house in the country. As a wedding present, Queen Elizabeth II reportedly plans to give them the proverbial keys to York Cottage on the grounds of the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk.

2. Both William and Harry are attached to Kensington Palace
The Daily Beast notes that Kensington Palace has long accommodated “a rotating cast of minor royals.” In fact, residences at the property were once “regarded very much as a consolation prize when it came to royal accommodation.”
But William and Kate — and now Harry and Meghan — are changing that because of their own emotional attachments to Kensington Palace. Their mother, Princess Diana, kept an apartment in the palace even after her divorce from Prince Charles. The princes grew up at Kensington Palace, and it makes sense that they favor the palace.
Next: This may be a reason why the couple is moving into such a large apartment right away.
1. Harry and Meghan may want to start a family right away
As for the most exciting reason why Harry and Meghan are moving into Apartment 1, that could be because they want to start a family soon. Entertainment Tonight reports that in their first joint interview with the BBC after becoming engaged, the couple said that they plan to “start a family in the near future.”
Sources told Entertainment Tonight that Harry is “ready to become a dad.” Plus, a friend of Meghan’s told The Independent that she “can’t wait to be a mother.” With rumors flying, another royal baby may be coming sooner rather than later.
