This Restaurant Was Just Named the No. 1 Restaurant in the World

The World’s 50 Best Restaurants has crowned its 2018 winner. This year, tastemakers from all over the globe traveled to Basque Country, Spain to enjoy the region’s finest cuisines and dining at various restaurants in the area. Following the festivities, culinary aficionados gathered at Palacio Euskalduna in Bilbao, Spain for the prestigious award ceremony.

The annual list — famous for its exclusion of female chefs and expensive taste — focuses on capturing the best culinary destinations around the world. According to the award’s website, the World’s 50 Best Restaurants “is more than just a list.” The list showcases and celebrates “the universality of cuisines,” with a focus on reflecting “the diversity of the world’s culinary landscape.” In addition, it exists as “a barometer for global gastronomic trends.”

This year’s World’s 50 Best Restaurants winner? European chef Massimo Bottura and his avant-garde Italian restaurant, Osteria Francescana. Despite having won the title before (and making the top five for nearly a decade) the three-Michelin-star restaurant is not what you’d expect.

The small, discreet restaurant is located in Modena, Italy — a fairly modest town in the country’s Emilia-Romagna region. With a focus on local ingredients, the menu is a direct representation of the area. Some of its most famous dishes? The Five Ages of Parmigiano Reggiano and the Adriatic Chowder. The Parmigiano Reggiano focuses on the Emilia-Romagna region’s acclaimed cheeses, while the chowder exists to represent travel and the local coastline.

In addition to the Emilia-Romagna region, Bottura’s culinary creations are heavily influenced by jazz music and art. The restaurant’s interior features high-quality works of art that tie the dining experience together in a poetic way.
