Thomas Markle Reveals His True Feelings About Missing the Royal Wedding in TV Interview

Days prior to the much-anticipated royal wedding, news broke that Meghan Markle’s father, Thomas Markle, would not be walking his daughter down the aisle, nor would he be in attendance at the ceremony. At that time, the announcement was the newest drama surrounding Meghan Markle’s family, and it shocked every royal fan in all the land (had to).

But before we get to Thomas Markle’s true feelings about missing his daughter’s big day, here’s a brief reminder of why he missed the occasion. First, there were the infamous and supposedly “candid” photos of Thomas Markle. In them, he was looking at pictures of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry. However, reports later claimed Thomas Markle had, in fact, staged the photos for the paparazzi. Obviously, that’s a major no-no.

Following that bit of controversy, Thomas Markle made headlines for another reason. (For the record, he has since apologized for the staged photos — apparently, they were his attempt at cleaning up his image in the media for the sake of his daughter.) This time, it was a pressing health concern. Allegedly, the aforementioned scandal is what led to Thomas Markle’s physical decline in the first place; shortly before the wedding, he had surgery on his heart. And since all that drama, people have been quite curious about the man in question, and they want answers.

Much to everyone’s surprise, Thomas Markle gave a rare TV interview on Good Morning Britain. During the interview, which aired on June 18, 2018, co-hosts Susanna Reid and Piers Morgan asked about his true feelings on missing the royal wedding.

Regarding Prince Charles taking on the special role of walking the bride down the aisle, Thomas Markle said,

I was honored. I can’t think of a better replacement than someone like Prince Charles. He looked very handsome and my daughter looked beautiful with him. I was jealous. I wish I had been there. I wish it’d been me, but thank God he was there.

For the record, Thomas Markle watched the wedding from a small bed and breakfast where he could escape the media. Of the experience of watching his daughter’s wedding on TV, Thomas Markle said, “The unfortunate thing for me now is I’m a footnote in one of the greatest moments in history rather than the dad walking her down the aisle.”

At the time of the interview, Thomas Markle has not met any members of the royal family.
