Millenials these days have been known to go through life capturing their (highly filtered) experiences on Facebook’s (NASDAQ:FB) very own Instagram. The photo-sharing service was acquired by Mark Zuckerberg’s social network in 2012 and has since enjoyed significant success, with everyone from Barack Obama to Beyonce to Marissa Mayer now boasting his or her own Instagram account.
The mobile app is popular thanks to its ability to serve as a photo journal and connect users with fellow phone snappers all over the world, but it is also useful in that it helps document what places people find the most exciting and photo-worthy. The Instagram blog recently published its list of most Instagrammed locations 0f 2013 and revealed the places where the most users felt compelled to slow down and take a picture this year.
Instagram reports that the most popular locations have changed in the past 12 months — poor Eiffel Tower– but some places still are holding their own and may continue to do so for years to come. Most of the locations on Instagram’s list have U.S. addresses, but more users from different countries are starting to sign up for accounts, so changes may be taking place soon. See if this year’s top 10 spots surprise you. All featured Instagram photos were highlighted by the Instagram blog.
10. High Line – New York
First up is the High Line. Some say that New York’s 1.45-mile linear park is overrated, but these Instagrammers don’t seem to think so. Instagram stats show that users thought the site was picture perfect and felt compelled to snap a picture, earning the High Line the No. 10 spot on Instagram’s most Instagrammed list. Located in New York, the High Line currently runs from Gansevoort Street, three blocks south of West 14th Street in the Meatpacking District, to 30th Street through the neighborhood of Chelsea to the West Side Yard, near the Javits Convention Center.
9. Suvarnabhumi Airport – Bangkok
Next up is Suvarnabhumi Airport in Thailand, Bangkok’s international airport. The location was 2012′s most Instagrammed place, but just 12 months later, it fell to the No. 9 spot. The airport has the world’s tallest free-standing control tower and the world’s fourth largest single-building airport terminal. Suvarnabhumi is also the 14th busiest airport in the world and the busiest in Thailand.
8. Dodger Stadium – Los Angeles
Back in America, we make our way to Dodger Stadium in Los Angles, where the eighth most Instagrammers felt compelled to snap a pic. The baseball park was also on 2012′s most Instagrammed location list but sat at the No. 7 spot last year. Dodger Stadium is the largest baseball-specific stadium in the U.S. and the third oldest in the country, but it also has hosted sporting events besides baseball. Maybe that’s what some Instagrammers captured on film, helping the stadium keep its most Instagrammed location status.
7. Central Park – New York
Another park makes the list at No. 7, this one also in the country’s most populous city. The urban park that stands at 840 acres is a favorite spot of both New York locals and visitors, and the location’s placement on Instagram’s list shows that even those who visit the grounds daily never get so tired of its scenery that they’re able to resist taking a picture.
6. Staples Center – Los Angeles
Jetsetting back to the opposite coast, we come to the sixth most Instagrammed location of 2013: Staples Center in L.A., the home of many Los Angeles-area sports teams. The sports area hosts the Los Angeles Lakers and the Los Angeles Clippers of the National Basketball Association, the Los Angeles Kings of the National Hockey League, and the Los Angeles Sparks of the Women’s National Basketball Association. According to one of its own press releases, Staples Center is the venue for more than 250 events and nearly 4,000,000 guests a year, and it is now 14 years old.
5. Disney World – Orlando, Florida
The place where all dreams come true takes the No. 5 distinction on Instagram’s list, granting Mickey and Minnie Mouse some significant face time. The park in in Orlando, Florida, is the most visited attraction in the world, with attendance of 52.5 million annually. The property covers 25,000 acres in the Sunshine State and is home to 24 theme resorts, four theme parks, and two water parks. Along with Mickey and Minnie, of course.
4. Bellagio Fountains – Las Vegas
Next up is a place that attracts a slightly more grown-up crowd: a hotel and casino located in the heart of Las Vegas. The Bellagio Fountains put on a show every 15 minutes each night in Sin City, featuring choreographed performances set to light and music. The best part about the Bellagio Fountains is that you don’t need a hotel reservation to secure a seat for the show — and even if you never visit Las Vegas, you can always get a sneak peek on Instagram.
3. Disneyland – Anaheim, California
Also in the western part of the United States, consumers are enraptured by what Disneyland, in California, has to offer. Instagrammers evidently need to photograph their location so their friends known what they’re missing. Disneyland comes in third place for 2013′s most Instagrammed location, and no one is likely happier about that than Walt Disney himself, as he now gets his second mention on the list.
It’s interesting that Disneyland beats Disney World in terms of Instagram stats — the park in Florida actually enjoys more visitors, but not apparently not as many Kodak moments.
2. Times Square – New York
Instagram’s second most popular location has an address in New York, and this one goes to Times Square, the location that New Yorkers hate to love and love to hate. The bustling intersection in Manhattan’s Midtown neighborhood is known as the ultimate tourist trap — but for good reason, considering many surveys name it the world’s most visited tourist attraction. Visitors have little qualms about breaking out their phones and taking a picture of the famous Times Square lights. In fact, they do it so much, Times Square almost wins the ultimate Instagram award.
1. Siam Paragon shopping mall – Bangkok
And now, we come to the most Instagrammed location of 2013: a massive shopping complex, movie theater, and aquarium in Bangkok. Siam Paragon is known as the subject of many pictures, earning the No. 2 distinction on Instagram’s list last year. But 2013 marks an especially popular year for the shopping mall, as it usurps Suvarnabhumi Airport from the Instagram throne and takes No. 1. December marks the eighth anniversary of Siam Paragon’s opening.
