Will Meghan Markle Be Taking Royal Style Tips From Kate Middleton?

As Meghan Markle prepares to marry Prince Harry, she has a friend who has been in similar shoes to help guide her: Kate Middleton. Markle’s future sister-in-law and Prince William’s wife has been helping her understand the role of a duchess.

The two women met in January 2017 when Prince Harry brought Markle home to the family. The women struck up a friendship, and Middleton has apparently been giving Markle some important royal fashion advice. Find out what tips Middleton has given to her soon-to-be sister-in-law, and discover how they’ll ease Markle’s transition in her royal role.

Middleton has been supplying Markle with the names of U.K. designers to use for everything. “[Duchess Catherine] has also been advising Meghan about royal fashion, what protocol is expected and how she may have to adapt in the future,” a source told the Independent. “She has provided Meghan with names of some of the favorite U.K. go-to designers on everything from dresses, coats, and the all-important British hat.”

Middleton is helping Markle learn how to be a fashionable royal, according to Travel + Leisure. And part of that is giving some nods to Prince Harry and Prince William’s mother, Princess Diana.

“Like Kate, expect Meghan to make the occasional nod to her husband’s fashion icon mother,” a source said. “Both Kate and Meghan will no doubt honor Princess Diana with designs that reflect her likes and style.”

Markle has already adopted some of Middleton’s suggestions, according to Harper’s Bazaar. Markle has been spotted wearing British labels — including Stella McCartney, Alexander McQueen, Burberry, and Marks & Spencer — while she attends royal engagements with Prince Harry. Keep an eye out for Markle sporting some of Middleton’s other favorites, such as Jenny Packham and L.K. Bennett.

On Christmas Day, Markle wore a custom hat — called a fascinator — by Philip Tracy. And on Commonwealth Day, she wore a white beret by Stephen Jones. She even wore the same suede pumps as Middleton, as well as a similar coat dress. Markle certainly has come a long way since she made her first public appearance — wearing ripped jeans and flats — at the Invictus Games in September 2017.

According to Travel + Leisure, Markle is getting more than fashion tips. In fact, she has been going through a royal preparation boot camp. Markle has had to learn about everything it takes to be a royal, which is a lot to absorb. She has had to study appropriate protocol, as well as self-defense and hostage training, just in case the unthinkable happens.

Markle has even been taking speech classes to soften her American accent, according to the Independent. “Meghan’s American twang will be softened and toned down,” a source said. “But more essential is her switching to British terminology — she simply cannot be ‘taking out the trash’ and ‘wearing pants.’ There’ll be no stone unturned as in less than 12 weeks all eyes will be on her — there is no room for error.”

According to the Independent, Markle has also been taking royal etiquette lessons to prepare her for royal life. “Meghan is on a crash course with a trusted coach used by the royals. First on the list is silver service — she must be able to tell a fish knife from her butter knife, know how to handle seafood, drink soup and so on,” a source said.
