You’ll Never Believe How Meghan Markle’s Dog Went From a Kill Shelter to Kensington Palace

Guy the beagle, Meghan Markle‘s dog, is the true recipient of a fairy tale ending. Before he was royalty, Guy was at a shelter in Kentucky where nobody wanted him. Read on for a detailed look at Guy’s journey.

1. Guy the beagle’s origin story

People found Guy the beagle alone in the woods, and he ended up at an animal shelter. After spending days at the shelter with nobody coming to look for him or adopt him, he was placed on the euthanasia list.

Next: Guy was saved.

It became clear that Guy wasn’t going to get adopted anytime soon. So the shelter sent an email to Dolores Doherty, who runs A Dog’s Dream Rescue in Ontario. It’s an organization that saves beagles who are going to be put down in the U.S. and brings them to Canada.

Next: It took a lot to get Guy to Canada.

3. Guy’s trip to Canada

Doherty, of course, said yes. So Guy’s journey to Canada began. A network of volunteers transported him over 500 miles to the Canadian border. Each person drove Guy for an hour and then handed him off to the next car, according to The Guardian.

Next: Lots of Canadians were interested in Guy.

4. Guy was pretty popular in Canada

Guy wasn’t even in Canada for a full day when people started showing interest in him. “He was just sitting there with those big beagle sad eyes, looking so depressed. He was irresistible,” Doherty told The Guardian. About 20 dogs were up for adoption the day Markle picked Guy. Markle was in Toronto at the time filming Suits.

Next: Doherty didn’t know Guy’s new mom was a celebrity.

At the time, Doherty didn’t have any idea as to Markle’s celebrity status. Doherty mentioned someone from the organization would need to come by Markle’s home to make sure it was an appropriate place for a dog. And Markle said that would be no problem but to give her plenty of notice for security reasons.

Doherty realized who Markle was shortly after she adopted Guy. She followed Markle’s Instagram and relished in seeing Guy being treated like royalty by the TV star. And after the news broke that Markle and Prince Harry were engaged, Doherty was over the moon.

“It’s just beyond my wildest imagination,” she told The Guardian. “How is that for a rags to riches story from a good old Kentucky beagle?”

7. Guy moves to the U.K.

In November 2017, Prince Harry‘s communication secretary said Guy had officially moved to the U.K. to live with Markle. Since then, Guy has been living a life of royalty. (He was even involved in the couple’s big day.)

Unfortunately, her other dog, Bogart, is too old to make the journey from the States to the U.K. So he’s now living with Markle’s close friends.
