2 Things Meghan Markle and Ivanka Trump Actually Have in Common
Meghan Markle and Ivanka Trump may both be public figures in their 30s, but you’d think that would be the only thing they have in common. With the latter being the first daughter of the United States and Markle having just married into the royal family, their differences have become more apparent as we constantly see them under the public eye.
Markle may have once admired the president’s eldest daughter, but now, it seems like their dissimilarities have completely driven them apart. Here is everything that seems to have driven a wedge between the two women, as well as the two things they actually have in common with each other (pages 5 and 6).
1. Markle once admired Ivanka Trump
Before Donald Trump’s presidency, Markle actually spoke highly about his oldest daughter on her now closed lifestyle blog, The Tig.
In 2014, Markle raved of Trump, “Staggeringly beautiful, no question, but so incredibly savvy and intelligent that she’s not just carved a niche for herself under her father’s famed Trump notoriety, she has undoubtedly created her own empire.”
Next: Could she be against Ivanka by association?
2. Markle definitely doesn’t like Donald Trump
Since Markle raved about Ivanka, the differences between the two women have become undeniably apparent. Markle definitely is not a fan of Donald Trump, as she made clear during a May 2016 appearance on The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore.
Markle commented, “It’s really the moment that I go, we film Suits in Toronto and I might just stay in Canada.” She added, “You’re not just voting for a woman if it’s Hillary Clinton because she’s a woman, but certainly, because Donald Trump has made it easy to see that you don’t really want that kind of world that he’s painting.”
Next: Ivanka may have been trying a bit too hard.
3. She was clearly hoping for an invite to the royal wedding
Despite their differences, Ivanka made it pretty clear that she was hoping for an invite to Markle’s wedding. Three weeks after Prince Harry and Markle announced their engagement, she finally sent out her oddly timed congratulatory tweet.
“Wishing Meghan and Prince Harry a lifetime of love, laughter, and happiness together. I have no doubt that this couple will do extraordinary things, both individually and collectively. Congratulations!,” she wrote. Of course, it didn’t take long for a Twitter user to call Trump out: “You know this won’t get you invited to the wedding, right?”
Next: Their actions speak louder than words.
4. Their versions of feminism are quite different
One major difference that stands out between Markle and the first daughter? Their different versions of feminism. Markle identifies as a feminist, and has actually been standing up for women for years. At only 11 years old, she was so angered by a dishwashing detergent commercial that she wrote letters to advocate change.
The advertisement claimed, “Women all over America are fighting greasy pots and pans.” However, with Markle’s activism, they changed the wording to “People all over America.” Since then, Markle has spoken out for global gender equality, and even joined UN Women in 2014.
Ivanka, too, has claimed, “I am [a feminist]. Absolutely.” However, she has yet to advocate for women in an effective and meaningful way. In 2009, she sent quite the opposite of a feminist message in her book, The Trump Card: Playing to Win in Work and Life.
She wrote, “Sexual harassment is never acceptable, and we must stand against it. At the same time … learn to figure out when a hoot or holler is indeed a form of harassment and when it’s merely a good-natured tease that you can give back in kind.”
Next: They did both experience this difficult time in childhood.
5. Both women’s parents are divorced
The two might take action on their beliefs in different ways, but looking back, they may have had some similar experiences while growing up. Both women have had to deal with their parents divorcing, which is certainly difficult for anyone to go through.
Markle’s parents divorced when she was just 6 years old. In December 2017, Prince Harry claimed that the royals have become “the family that I suppose she’s never had,” according to The Daily Mirror.
Similarly, Ivanka Trump was only 8 years old when her parents first split up, leading to their very public (and scandalous) divorce. Donald had cheated on Ivana Trump with his eventual second wife, Marla Maples, causing their names to land all over the tabloids.
The eldest Trump daughter recalled in an interview with People, “We didn’t have newspapers in the house for a significant period of time and the TV wasn’t on when they weren’t there.” She explained, “They tried to mitigate the attention that that moment received.”
Next: We can’t deny this similarity.
6. They have similar tastes in fashion
Politics aside, fashion is one thing both women can definitely agree on. In April 2018, Ivanka Trump was spotted wearing a $1,700 navy dress with yellow flowers by Altuzarra — which happens to be one of Markle’s go-to designers.
They’ve even rocked the exact same dress on separate occasions. In October 2017, Markle wore a gorgeous black and white Carolina Herrera ball gown on the cover of Vanity Fair. Then, in March 2018, Trump’s daughter wore that very gown to an event in Washington, D.C.
Next: However, fashion could also be driving them apart.
7. Fashion designers want to dress Markle, not the Trump women
No matter how similar their tastes in fashion are, it’s also something that drives them apart. While designers are lining up to dress Markle, many have refused to associate with the Trump family.
Designer Sophie Theallet even wrote an open letter, which she shared to Twitter. It reads, “As one who celebrates and strives for diversity, individual freedom, and respect for all lifestyles, I will not participate in dressing or associating in any way with the next First Lady.”
A source revealed to People, “This has already been going on for months. Designers wouldn’t lend to Melania, Ivanka, or Tiffany.” However, luckily for the Trump women, Ivanka has her own fashion line to rely on. The source explained, “They either bought the items themselves or wore Ivanka’s brand. There was a lot of shopping their own closets.”
While they may have a few similarities in their lives, the Trumps’ involvement in politics has only revealed just how different the two women really are.
