Which 2019 Academy Award Nominees Have Never Won?
When it comes to Academy Award nominees, it often seems like we’re seeing the same faces over and over again. But while many of the following people have been nominated in the past, most haven’t actually taken home an Oscar. These are the 2019 Academy Award nominees who have never won at the Oscars.
Best Actor: All but one
Christian Bale is the only one of his fellow Best Actor nominees to win before. With Vice, Bale has been nominated a total of five times, taking home the award for his first nomination in The Fighter.
Bradley Cooper has received his fourth Oscar nomination for acting. He is nominated for three awards this year for A Star Is Born: Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Adapted Screenplay. Cooper has yet to win an Oscar, having been previously nominated for Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle, and American Sniper.
Willem Dafoe has earned his fourth Oscar nomination for acting for At Eternity’s Gate. He has been nominated for Best Supporting Actor three times, for Platoon, Shadow of a Vampire, and The Florida Project.
Viggo Mortensen has earned his third Oscar nomination for Best Actor. If he wins for Green Book, it will be his first Academy Award win. Mortensen was previously nominated for Best Actor for Eastern Promises and Captain Fantastic.
Best Actress: All of the nominees
Melissa McCarthy, who is up for her role in Can You Ever Forgive Me?, was nominated once previously in the same category for Bridesmaids.
Glenn Close has been nominated a record six times for an acting Oscar without a win. Her nomination for The Wife marks her seventh total and fourth in the Best Actress category.
Olivia Colman has also received her first nomination from the Academy, for her role in The Favourite. Colman has been a major winner at the BAFTAs in the past, taking home four awards out of seven nominations over the years.
Lady Gaga has earned two Oscar nominations for A Star Is Born, one for acting and one for the original song “Shallow.” She has previously been nominated in the Best Original Song category for “Til It Happens to You” from the documentary The Hunting Ground.
Best Supporting Actor: Three out of five
Sam Rockwell is another one of the few Oscar winners on this list. Rockwell won the same prize last year, so it doesn’t seem likely that he will take home the Academy Award for Vice in 2019.
Adam Driver is also up for his first Oscar for his role in BlacKkKlansman. The young Star Wars actor has seen a lot of growth in his career over the last couple of years.
Sam Elliott, who is up for his role in A Star Is Born, has never been nominated for an Academy Award prior to this. He did receive two Golden Globe nominations in the 1990s.
Best Supporting Actress: Again, three out of five
Marina de Tavira is up for her role in Roma. This is her first Academy Award nomination.
Regina King is also nominated for her first Oscar this year, for her role in If Beale Street Could Talk. She took home the top prize for this role at the Golden Globes earlier this year, where she was also nominated for her role in the miniseries Seven Seconds.
Emma Stone, who is nominated for her role in The Favourite, has been up for an Oscar twice prior. Stone won the Academy Award for Best Actress in 2017 for La La Land.
Rachel Weisz is also nominated for The Favourite. This is her second Oscar nomination, having won previously for her role in The Constant Gardener in 2006.
Best Director: One (or two) out of five
Spike Lee is up for three total awards for BlacKkKlansman. Lee has been nominated twice before, but never for directing. In 2015, he won an Honorary Academy Award.
Pawel Pawlikowski won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 2015. This year, he is nominated for Best Director and Best Foreign Language Film for Cold War.
Yorgos Lanthimos is nominated Best Director and Best Picture for The Favourite. He was previously nominated for Best Original Screenplay for The Lobster and Best Foreign Language Film for Dogtooth but has never won at the Oscars.
Adam McKay is nominated in three categories for Vice. This is his second nomination for directing. McKay previously won Best Adapted Screenplay for The Big Short.
