2019 Emmy Nominee ‘Schitt’s Creek’ Dropped the Premiere Date for Their Final Season
Pop TV just revealed the premiere date for the final season of Schitt’s Creek. Season 8 of the popular comedy is set to premiere on January 7, 2020, marking the end of the road for the Roses. Here’s everything we know about the show’s final season and the chances that it will take home an Emmy this weekend.
Pop TV says goodbye to ‘Schitt’s Creek’
With the premiere of Schitt’s Creek a few months away, the president of Pop TV, Brad Schwartz, opened up about the show’s final season. According to Deadline, Schwartz admitted that it will be sad saying goodbye to the show but assured fans that it will go out with a bang.
“It is gut-wrenching to say goodbye, but we know this final season will deliver even more of the heart and humor that has made the series one of the best ever.”
The single-camera show was created by Daniel and Eugene Levy. The series stars Catherine O’Hara, Annie Murphy, Emily Hampshire, Chris Elliott, Noah Reid, Jennifer Robertson, Sarah Levy, Karen Robinson, and Dustin Milligan. Eugene also plays the lead in the show.
While we cannot wait to see what happens to the Roses in Schitt’s Creek’s final season, it will also be interesting to see if the show takes home an Emmy (or two) this year.
Will ‘Schitt’s Creek’ win an Emmy?
Schitt’s Creek received a total of four Emmy nominations for the 2019 season. This includes Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series (Eugene Levy), Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Contemporary Costumes, and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series (Catherine O’Hara).
Although the series has been going strong for the past five seasons, this is the first time it has been considered Emmy worthy.
Whether or not the show will win an Emmy is yet to be seen, but it is going up against some stiff competition.
In the category of Best Comedy Series, Schitt’s Creek is competing with The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Fleabag, Veep, The Good Place, Barry, and Russian Doll. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel won last year and could take it again.
The show won a bid for best costume for the episode, “The Dress,” but lost to Russian Doll. Other series in this category include Black-ish, Grace and Frankie, Escape at Dannemora, and Sharp Objects.
When it comes to individual performances, Eugene Levy is up against the reigning champion in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series category: Bill Hader (Barry). Anthony Anderson (Black-ish), Don Cheadle (Black Monday), Michael Douglas (The Kominsky Method), and Ted Danson (The Good Place) also received bids.
O’Hara, meanwhile, will be facing off with the likes of Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), Christina Applegate (Dead to Me), Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Veep), Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag), and Natasha Lyonne (Russian Doll).
Levy opens up about receiving Emmy nomination
The creators of Schitt’s Creek were understandably surprised when the show received four Emmy nominations. In a recent interview, Daniel Levy revealed that he found out about the nominations when he was visiting Tuscany for a vacation.
The director/actor explained how he was completely alone when he heard the good news because his friends had left to pick up some groceries.
Excited by the accomplishment, Levy said that he paced around the house and kept screaming to himself, which turned out to be an embarrassing moment.
Levy created the series with his father. The story centers on a family who is adjusting to living inside a tiny motel. Levy plays the lead in the series while O’Hara portrays his wife.
The comedy has been a huge success in Canada, though it was slow to catch on in the states. That all changed in 2017 when Netflix started streaming the series, which brought it into the spotlight.
Back the Emmys, Levy admitted that he never expected to win any awards for the show. Instead, he has always focused on the work and giving fans a better product with each passing year.
There is no telling if Schitt’s Creek will take home an Emmy this weekend, but we certainly hope the show gets the recognition it deserves.
The final season of Schitt’s Creek premieres January 7 on Pop TV.
The 71st Primetime Emmys will air September 22 on Fox.
