2019 Razzie Nominations: Were These the Worst Movies of the Last Year?
Usually, getting nominated for an award is a good thing. Actors, directors, producers, and writers all celebrate when they learn they’ve earned a nomination from the Academy or the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. But there’s one award that they probably don’t want to be nominated for – and that they definitely don’t want to win: a Golden Raspberry.
Rather than recognizing cinematic greatness, the Golden Raspberry Awards – or Razzies, as they’re generally known — honor the worst in filmmaking. They’ve been awarded since 1981, and have gone from a Hollywood in-joke to a major event, with hundreds of journalists, critics, and regular people voting on that year’s worst movies. Stars sometimes even show up to receive their awards in person.
The nominations for the 2019 Razzie Awards were announced on January 21. Here are their picks for the worst movies of the past year.
The worst movies of 2018
The Razzies singled out five stinkers for the dubious honor of the worst movie of 2018. They are:
- The Happytime Murders
- Holmes & Watson
- Robin Hood
The “worst director” nominees closely mirrored the worst picture nominees. Etan Cohen was nominated for Holmes & Watson, which earned poor reviews from both audiences and critics and underperformed at the box office. Gotti’s Kevin Connolly also got a nod, as did Brian Henson for The Happytime Murders, and the Spierig Brothers for Winchester. James Foley was also nominated for Fifty Shades Freed.
The worst actors and actresses of 2018
The Razzies took a shot at President Donald Trump this year, nominated for worst actor (as himself) for Death of a Nation, a documentary from conservative directors and writer Dinesh D’Souza, and Fahrenheit 11/9, from liberal Michael Moore.
The other worst actor nominees are:
- Johnny Depp for Sherlock Gnomes
- Will Ferrell for Holmes & Watson
- John Travolta for Gotti
- Bruce Willis for Death Wish
In the “worst supporting actor” category, the nominees are:
- Jamie Foxx for Robin Hood
- Ludacris for Show Dogs
- Joel McHale for Happytime Murders
- John C. Reilly for Holmes & Watson
- Justice Smith for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
The worst actress nominees are:
- Jennifer Garner for Peppermint
- Amber Heard for London Fields
- Melissa McCarthy for The Happytime Murders and Life of the Party
- Helen Mirren for Winchester
- Amanda Seyfried for The Clapper
The worst supporting actress nominees are:
- Kellyanne Conway (as herself) for Fahrenheit 11/9
- Marcia Gay Harden for Fifty Shades Freed
- Kelly Preston for Gotti
- Jaz Sinclair for Slender Man
- Melania Trump (as herself) for Fahrenheit 11/9
How people reacted to the nominations
So far, we haven’t seen any reaction from the major nominees – including President Trump. Some winners end up taking their award in stride, like Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who shared a photo of the statue he won last year for Baywatch on Instagram.

Great homecoming for me ♂️ After months away from home due to filming, I come back home to these Christmas gift surprises waiting for me in my office. Amazing gift from Disney commemorating over 5 MILLION WORLDWIDE SALES for our soundtrack of MOANA, on which I sang the song YOU’RE WELCOME. And a sweet little GOLDEN RAZZIE AWARD for making BAYWATCH. Categorized as — A movie so rotten and shitty, you actually fell in love with it. Hey, I take full responsibility for the so punch me right in the kisser for that one. #WelcomeHomeDJ #AndMerryXmas
Of course, some fans thought certain movies and performers didn’t deserve their nominations.
#Razzies well we have a right mix of just hate this year, but seriously Helen Mirren worst actress, are you kidding me, Winchester might not be a good movie, but she is the best part of it.

So the nominations announced for the prestigious Razzie Awards. As always some obvious nominations (Holmes & Watson, Happytime Murders & Gotti).
But did Robin Hood, Death Wish and The Meg altho not great, really deserve their nominations?#RazzieAwards #razzies

Others called out the Razzies for trying to get too political with the nominations for Trump, while a few people, including director and actor Mark Duplass, dismissed the awards as “mean-spirited and worthless.”
The Razzies have been announced! They are just as mean-spirited and worthless as ever!
